The last country in the Empire to get rid of slavery was Sierra Leone* in 1928 - within the Queen's lifetime. *I know it was set up as a free haven for ex-slaves and a place for us to dump the undesirable freed slaves.
Many historians view the end of the British Empire as the end of British rule in Hong Kong - in 1997. So, she was head of the British Empire for most of her reign - as well as the Commonwealth (formed in 1931). As Queen, she oversaw a lot of good from governments and people of the country - but also a lot of bad too.
so you don’t think it’s the role of the figurehead of a country to speak out. All those things were done in her name. Other than the timing everything he said was 100.% correct. I can’t and don’t defend the timing but whitewashing history helps no one.
The Govt is the Crown and vice versa , in reality the Government makes the decision of state but in the name of the Crown
King Charles III said prior to his accession to the throne that as soon as he became king he would stop being an activist. If a monarch were to interfere in politics/social issues in this country now it would mark the beginning on the British Republic.
The crown specifically lobbied to be exempt from sex and racial discrimination laws in the 70s and had a policy of not employing minority workers in clerical jobs which was in place until at least the late 60s.
I’m saying she is the fuurehead. She benefited from it. She has been the constant. Again timing was wrong points made weren’t. It’s not my relatives that were enslaved but I can see if they had of been I might be pretty angry.
I can find things to agree with re: the criticism. But I think sometimes we get lost in our anger and miss our compassion - we forget that she was someone's mom, aunt, etc.
Can’t see how you can apologise for a comment like that, it wasn’t made in sudden anger as I’ll thought comments often are. He said it he meant it.
