I did all the Van Halen 70s, 80s & 90s albums on the bounce for the first time a few weeks ago. Not my cup of tea, but I could see why they got so popular. Same with Kiss too. Just coming to the end of Elvis Costello and currently lined up next on the spreadsheet random number generator is "The Power Station". I don't think I've ever heard (of) them before...
This is exactly what I was talking about above. Music has become universal. The Japanese do some amazing takes on all genres & they are always interesting. Until the coming of the black ships they were a totally closed community, now they are obsessed by all things western.
You might hate this. This was the true alternative 80's sound. Liz Fraser of Cocteaus on vocals. Proper bedroom video. Maurice Deebank on guitar was up there with the brilliant Johnny Marr
Started senior school in '64 and my first record was an EP by the Beatles featuring their first 3 singles. My lightbulb moment came in '70 when ToTP had Sabbath on doing Paranoid and Deep Purple doing Black Night. By the mid-70's I was mobile (motorbike) and saw most of the heavy rock bands of the era in Sheffield and Manchester. Was at the first Monsters of Rock fest and I've done Download subsequently. That said, the best gig I've been to was at Wembley Arena in 1980 for Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band. He tore the roof off the place and has never returned to the UK since.
I have managed to replace all my vinyl from the 70's that i can remember owning, Cat Stevens, Carly Simon James Taylor CSN&Y etc with original press records When i bought 4 Way Street, the label on disc 2 was on the wrong sides, I got the dead same copy this year. The woman that comes to the market has supplied me with many she is really well priced. I got a box set of Beatles every LP plus a bonus LP and some posters etc. cost me a whack but it's original and good nic. I Have a Cambridge Audio TT which is Bluetooth enabled so I can have the player by the side of the settee and not get up and down to change records. Can't beat a bit of vinyl
A couple of years ago, I went through 2-3 random bands from 50 countries (not UK, Ireland or USA) and found Melt Banana in Japan. They are bonkers and this is one of my favourite covers of all time...
Yeah. Melt Banana could have been a name I dropped TBH. Simple tape speed work, but brilliant. I'm more of a dog person. My Mum was a cat person. Is this good? No. Entertaining? Yes.
Have you got an original pressing of "Tonight's the Night" by Neil Young. Bruce Berry was a working man He used to load that Econoline van A sparkle was in his eye But his life was in his hands And people, let me tell you Late at night when the people were gone He used to pick up my guitar And sing a song in a shaky voice That was real as the day was long
I've got the original on vinyl if you/anyone interested Peachy. Got quite a few Neil Young records (17 or 18) that I'm looking to offload, some in better nick than others but all playable and originals. Looking at 20 notes for TTN. I don't really listen to NY any more and need to make dollar for moving out next year.
Not the best record ever made, but this was my first punk record. Manchester punk band that supported the pistols.
Sorry mate, long day and had footy tonight! Nice one, I'll email a list over the weekend and if any are of interest i can let you know more about condition/price etc
My pal is a fanatical punk supporter and does all the festivals. Slaughter are still touring I think although probably no original members now. They played at the Trade Hall on that famous night and met up with Rob Gretton of Joy Div fame. I think they went on Rabid records with Gretton but you may be able to better confirm that ? By the way, my mate still dresses up in full punk regalia every week just to have a pint in his local. It’s not proper punk in the original sense….. it’s a £200 leather jacket , finely polished Doc Martens and chains/ badges etc but you’ve got to admire him … he’s about 56. Punk is certainly not dead as he says there is a hardcore group of a few hundred who meet up to see the UK Subs, Vibrators, etc etc Charlie Harper ( UK Subs ) is still doing regular touring and he will be late seventies now. He is loved by all the fans. One that is not so popular is Animal from the Anti Nowhere league
Weird innit, musical taste. You’re definitely not on your own. Probably my favourite band, after Beatles and Kinks. Body of work over 21 years is absolutely phenomenal IMO. Personally don’t think there’s anyone else, past or present, to match it. And won’t be in my lifetime either.
On the topic of weird Japanese bands.....Sadistic Mika Band are pretty good. Think they toured in the 60's and were mates with Clapton et al.
