People learn at different speeds. I don't think it matters too much. I think it's more important to integrate with your peers and own your learning and showcase aptitude, but i'm no child psychologist :)

Good for your son and his wife :) Someone close to me has got his phd, worked at a university for a year (12 month contract) and he's now looking for his next role/university. Having spoken with my girlfriend's brother, who works at a top university in London, he advised that maybe he should think outside the box and not limit himself to universities. It's hard when you study for so long and get into the academic mindset, and then the system doesn't meet expectations. It requires removing the ego as much as possible and accepting that another route may be the only plausible one. I understand I'm talking in riddles a bit but it's personal and not for me to give full disclosure of his situation.

It's nice to be in sync in those situations. Me and Laura came together..... through good customer service skills :).

Yes there is life outside Academia, but in these post-Brexit times, perhaps your mate might think about going to Europe for better opportunities.

He could even just expand beyond universities and look at schools, but i think his pride gets in the way.

I get that. But in comparison to say the sixties. Only 2% at the top universities were deemed working class. Now it's around 12%. Still a small amount but considerably more than previously.

When I went to wombwell high it was notable that only 1 or 2 went to universities of any grade. From the entire school. And they were lauded as an example of what could be achieved.

Several ( Started at wombwell went onto Barnsley college) in my youngest lads Class circa 2000 (note class not school) . Achieved that goal.

What Gravys lad has proved is that things are gradually changing. But I fear if the Tories had their way. They'd revert back to type.
