May 77, 3 up at half time and rollin'. From that day to this , whenever there has been a healthy, yet unexpected half time lead ......................................... Remember Exeter ( And Halifax for that matter)

I wondered if somebody would remember this! Boy, but that was the model for "game of two halves". Walked off killing them at half time three nil. Lost 3-4. It was as if our goalhole became a giant vacuum cleaner. I still have nightmares about this. Maxim: never bet on Barnsley!

Doesn't this mark you out as being of a certain vintage. Younger ones might recall Ipswich...

When was the last time we played them in the league? Was that it? I can't remember watching us play Exeter - can't make tomorrow either due to train strike :(

We beat them 1-0 away during the 20-match unbeaten run in 1980/81.

Iley Out! Remember the cushions been chucked down from what is now the West Stand Upper - they were our only 1100 seats those days! Memories eh?

AND ( where clearly I may need to be corrected) did the Reds side not include, "Tricky winger" Neil Warnock?

The first game I ever stood up at. Dad had taken me in the stand before, but for the Exeter game we stood on the terrace. But rarely ever did after that. So I'm going tomorrow. I bumped into a BBSer this evening and I'm going to meet him. And sit (yuch) on the terrace.

I believe the poison has now gone from our club and I believe in the board we have now.

And I'll think back to that Exeter game 45 years ago, and I'll think about my dad, and I'll think about Tyketical Masterstroke's dad, and I'll think about Gaz, a lot, and I'll think about Bright Red, and I'll think about Steve S, and I'll think about Jimmy Jazz, and I'll think about my beautiful sister and I hope we win but it really doesn't matter if we don't.

The 76/77 season was my first proper season. I was 14 when it kicked off in August and I went with my mates to every home game. I'd been to a few games at the back end of the previous season, and I'd been to the odd game or two with my Dad years earlier, but 76/77 was when I really caught the Oakwell bug.

I have memories of some great games that season. The 2-2 draw against Bradford, a 5-1 demolition of Scunthorpe, and a cracking 2-1 victory over division leaders Cambridge that really got our hopes up...

...until we played bloody Exeter a couple of games later and it all came crashing down. I was devastated.

I've been trying to forget that game ever since.

    Thanks for this thread.

The game was our last chance to mount a promotion push as Exeter were above us. I was there aged 7 and 3/4, sitting in the west stand (my Dad must have been feeling flush).
It served as the perfect introduction to being a Barnsley supporter and the perpetual cycle of hope, excitement and inevitable disappointment.

What a great name... Alan Beer lol.
I used to stand near the tunnel, behind the away team dugout, and got hit on the head by one of the cushions for the main stand seats. Ended up taking it home with me!
I was 12 years old, and can still remember feeling gutted about the result.

Was also at the 1-0 win at St James's Park. Stopped off in Gloucester on the way home and some of the locals didn't seem keen on us being there!

It was my first ‘proper’ season too, though I was much much younger than you - 12. Went to every home game. Remember feeling physically sick after this game, though I didn’t really know that this feeling would be common to watching the Reds at that point. Never seen us play at St James’ though I did watch Exeter 0-0 Walsall in 1990. League Cup 1st round first leg - a thriller!

Would have gone down to this game but sadly was called away to the South of France for work. 25 degrees all week but now absolutely pelting it down. Good luck to all that have travelled. I’ll be ‘watching’ on my phone.
