Joe Joyce, John Beresford, Nicky, Bobby.. Eaden is one of the best footballers I ever saw for the Reds. Hoyland lad, Kirk Balker.. My Mam was friends with his Gran from church, His Hayselden sponsored club car was often parked at her bungalow on Mel Avenue.. Sometimes a hour after the match when I got off the bus & headed back to my folks house.... brilliant bloke..
I don't think Rory Fallon got enough respect at Barnsley. 'Bambi on Ice' ?? He had Cannavaro in his pocket in the World Cup. I'll never forget the time he came back with Plymouth. Got subbed late on & went & sat in the home dugout.?! Laugh? I nearly bought my own beer..
Peterborough mate. Ben Alnwick in goal for them. Saved everything we threw at him for 91 minutes, then fumbled George’s header for a late winner.
Loved reading this, really interesting insight! Funny to hear that Davey is as rubbish as he appeared from the outside
Could never understand why Christensen never got given a proper chance but I always suspected it might be personal with Davey. He looked the business in the small bits we saw of him. I remember going to an 'Evening With Simon Davey' at the Monkey (Eastfield Arms) at Thurgoland just prior to the Chelsea game. Everyone was invited to write down a question for Davey and mine was to ask why Kim Christensen wasn't getting any games. It got read out to Davey and he just fudged an answer, something along the lines of him not doing enough in training to merit selection.
I got to know Paul Reid quite well and I can 100% confirm that Davey was extremely unpopular to put it mildly. He just blanked players and wouldn’t be pleasant or have discussions about their futures etc. Paul was very happy to get away from the club especially with the sizeable sum they offered to settle his contract.
Think you're mixing up Christensen with Pederson? Remember Pederson scoring a cracker against the Fowls at Oakwell at the away end.
I'm glad everyone thought he was an arsehole - not wanting to dredge this up again but he got me kicked out of doing the job I loved on Oakwell AM for a load of absolute ********. Sadly there was no-one at the station or the club (Rob Knowles) to stand up to him on my behalf, so that was it, I was gone. Anyway...
I liked Pearson. I think he was just a bit unlucky really. Angus & Jackson had both had good seasons with us the year before & Lindsay & Pinnock joined so he was well down the pecking order. Right player, wrong time & understandably wanted regular football instead of bench warning waiting for one of the first choice defenders to earn a move elsewhere.
If hard done by involves being paid more for a day (for two hours of football training) than full time employees on minimum wage get in a month, but not being selected for the first team all that regularly, then no professional footballer has ever been hard done by since the maximum wage was scrapped.
