1 win in 6 and been sacked from two clubs in just six months. He gave us a great season but maybe he just got lucky helped by no fans as he's done nothing since.
I don’t agree with that. He created an amazing team spirit. That isn’t luck. I do accept the anomalies of that season may have helped us in a few games but I saw a man stamping his style and authority in a bunch of lads that would run through walls for each other. he did well at WBA and Besiktas were second / possibly even top last week!
Wouldn't be surprised if his style fits well with an underdog. I always thought he'd struggle at West Brom, but remember thinking that a team like Burnley (when they were in the premiership) might have suited him a lot more. Be interesting to see where he ends up next.
5th in the table and only 4 points behind the leaders who they drew against! Val's had a difficult time in that the Club President has been very involved in bringing in 'trophy' signings, rather than players that would work for the way Val wants to play. Two prime examples are Dele Alli and Cenk Tosun. Can you imagine Dele Alli putting in a Mowatt type shift in midfield! Val was told Alli had to start every week and I'm pretty sure that Val has then substituted him in every game he started! I'd have him back here in a heartbeat if there was a vacancy.
The fans didn't like the style at all. He arrived at West Brom at a time where they expected promotion as a minimum, but also wanted to be entertained in the process. Like I say, not really his area! That's why I think a struggling-to-mid premier side would have been a much better option for him.
Some managers get praise and often rightly for achieving promotion etc. Some are successful in a different way, namely papering over the cracks at a club on a downward trajectory and get no credit for it. Big Val has two such clubs on his CV in us and wba, both of which went markedly downhill when he left. I always thought it was the same with big Mick at Ipswich and recent premier League examples of dyche and bielsa. I also have a sneaky feeling/hope that Wednesday are the same. If they don't get promoted this season they'll sack big daz. They'll narrowly miss out on tempting pep from city and unless they drop on the next Eddie Howe, they'll go backwards.
I'd suggest it's evident just how not great the actual West Brom squad is, considering where they are currently. I think he was doing an ok job, nothing out of this world but not deserving of the sack. I'd love if they joined us in league one.
He’d sort out the likes of Martin and Kane running around looking busy without really doing anything other than wimping out of tackles. And we’d move the ball a damn sight more quickly than we do now.
I wish Martin had put the effort in to run around looking busy. From what I saw he stood around looking lazy
