Mine would be Master Mariner by Nicholas Monserrat , about a sea farer who commits an act of so called cowardice during the Spanish Armada invasion , He is compelled to live forever in the British Navy and his adventures throughout naval history are spellbinding imo, going through all the eras of the British Navy .
'Captain Corelli's Mandolin'...if only to expunge from memory the travesty of the terrible film that starred Nicholas Cage, Penelope Cruz and Christian Bale that turned an excellent anti-war film into a 'Mills & Boon' romance. All the subtlety and detail was lost and scenes added that never existed in the book.
Would love to see someone tackle 'Red Harvest' by Dashiell Hammett and can't believe it's never been adapted for TV or Film. Also thought 'Elvis Over England' by Barry Hines would make a good road movie.
Always thought Shantaram but it's not living up to the book based on the first couple of episodes on Apple TV. But tv/film never does justice to a great book
The Honourable Schoolboy - the middle one of the George Smiley trilogy and better than Tinker Taylor and Smiley's People in my opinion.
Enigma by Robert Harris - a novel based on the Blechley Park code-breakers. A book I'm re-reading at the moment, excellent.
The Danilov Quintet by Jasper Kent. Series of vampire novels set at various stages of Russian history, commencing with Napoleon's invasion in 1812 and culminating with the revolution a hundred years later.
Another series would be the silence of the lambs novels . Although SotL film was very good though nothing near as the book which is generally the case the others in the series ie red dragon were a disappointment imo , The Red Dragon book was outstanding and very believable and would need a series to do it justice . Imo with a quality director and cast this series would have the potential to become a classic if it keeps to the plot of the books .
I think the idea is based on the character but the format id nowhere nectar the book imo .as Hannibal is in jail in the books and the perpetrators are his clients from his psychiatric clinics .
H.G. Wells The War Of The Worlds done exactly to the book. Closest to it is Jeff Wayne's musical version.
