So away from football, Now Musk has got his grubby mitts on Twitter quite a few people are moving to Mastodon as an alternative. I've managed to create an account and even sent my fist Tweet blog? is that the right term?. It seems to work ok on the app but I cant get it to work on a web browser - I can login but the formatting is all screwed anyone else set themselves up on there and have any tips as to what might be wrong

Should it just work in a web browser eg Chrome or Edge or do you need to download an app or UI to your PC?

    Its a turn of phrase
From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English grubby hands/paws/mittsinformal used to talk about someone touching something or becoming involved in it when you do not want them to Keep your grubby paws to yourself!

You may be surprised to learn I am not a fan of Musks takeover of Twitter

It should work on your browser. I'm still trying to figure out Mastodon as well. I don't think that it'll ever take off, mainly because all the content and users are scattered over lots of different servers. That, and Mastodon is quite a terrible name for something like this.

That'd be a better name for sure, much more catchy.

I think it all depends on how badly Musk breaks Twitter. In its current form I dont think Mastodon will grab all the upset Twitter users because its not so simple to use - ideal for computer geeks less so for your average "Im a celebrity" fan.

I dont think the scattered severs is an issue - I signed up on mastodonapp.uk but have happily been reading posts by people on mastodon.green, mastodon.ie and mastodon.social quite happily.
I guess the fact is its not Twitter and deliberately so so its getting a hang of the differences
My current stumbling block is browsing on my PC - not figured that out yet - no idea why its not working. It works as expected on the mastodon app on my phone

just tried signing up, but still waiting for a confirmation email. I think the thing many people will struggle with, is the idea of decentralised servers. mastodon does have a 'central server' mastodon.social, but they've closed it for new accounts, due to the demand. I think a lot of people will get to the sign up page, get confused pretty quickly and just not bother. I doubt it will bother the rocket man, any time soon

SH1TTER seems like a good name for a new, not quite-as-good Twitter.

unfortunately there's very sad truth in that. many people measure the mark of a person by how much money they have.

I'm guessing that this is open to create your own servers etc and name them. That this will lead to everyone using certain names like the rush to register domain names in squatter style....

    Or have I misunderstood that......

Seems rather primitive. Hence the name "Mastadon". Now you've mentioned squatting you just need to dig a hole and use @Gally 's 5H ITTER.
