I wouldn't go that far but something needs doing,National Service for a start. All those young men and women ( and older ones) who fought for their country and died for idiots like these. What goes through their minds is beyond me.

So let me get this right. A daft 18 year old splits up with his girlfriend, gets bladdered and takes out his frustrations on some public property. Not another person, but an inanimate object with no feelings. And for that you'd impose a life sentence?

What sentence would you impose for damaging another human being, bearing in mind that to be proportionate, it would have to be harsher than the sentence for damaging a object with no feelings, consciousness or ability to feel pain?

Probably some form of appropriate and proportionate punishment, including education about what it stands for.

A society that imprisons people for life for property damage is something those being remembered would have fought against.

Idiots. A bit of community service required though. Life imprisonment for that. What’s the penalty for littering being hung drawn and quartered?

As others have said, they're idiots and they should be punished.

The punishment has to fit the crime though. Community Service seems like an appropriate punishment for vandalism.

Those asking for life imprisonment must be having a laugh, surely.

Agree. Community service (not talking 1930's style 'chain gangs' here :)) but something along the lines of litter clearing in urban areas, hedges grassed areas parkland etc. and graffiti removal would benefit communities , the environment, and highlight the cost and inconvenience caused by that kind of antisocial behaviour to those involved. Clearing other people's mess is tedious especially if they have to keep returning to the same areas where the problems recur. A couple of hundred hours unpaid supervised community work might just instil a bit of respect for people and property.
I suggest litter and graffiti rather than painting/ building restoration work as it is more 'transitory' (a bit like housework and weeding a garden) since however well you do it you just know it frequently needs doing again..and again... and again!

    Teach them to kill !?
Agree they need some sort of punishment that teaches right from wrong , assuming they aren’t aware to start with but teaching them combat skills may start another criminal career for the undeterred .
I think a proper funded and policed community service would be better but not the box ticking ones in place now .

I began my working life in the 70s and met many who had served National Service, almost to a man they were bone idle bigots...

I'd say appropriate community service like helping disabled and elderly service men and women, where hopefully they might learn as they work

Oh come on you know that's not what he meant really and you know it.
He just took offence at the crime, after watching all the servicemen and women on Sunday its blatantly obvious how much the occasion meant to them and how they would feel about such an act.
