Thanks I was getting confused with Les Lea and Frank Sharp for the Cardiff connection. Norman Dean was a favourite of mine but some thought him to be a bit lazy.
I remember the away game at Valley Parade where Frank and Les made their debuts. They looked like class players and so they proved to be. We also had Mike Kear on loan from Middlesbrough playing on the right wing. Big following from Barnsley. First away game of the season
Calvin Plummer both signed from Derby as they went in to administration we then went on to beat Derby 5-1 in next game
In that case I stand corrected! I remembered we brought in 5 new players in the summer, and I thought Aylott was one of them Glavin Hunter Pierce Lester? ??
Me too … I certainly thought Aylott came in the summer but obviously not. Besides Clarke, who else was our striker at the start of the season ? Was Speedie the player you were thinking of ?
Possibly him I'm thinking of. The only other one I can think of was Neil Cooper but I thought he came a bit later.
Nope. We brought in four permanent signings during the Summer of 1979 (Glavin, Pierce, Hunter & Flavell). Alan Dugdale came in on a month's loan. The next permanent signing was Mike Lester in September. Trevor Aylott followed at the end of October. Ian Evans came in later at the dend of December on loan, before making the deal permanent for a then club record fee of £95,000. Next came Neil Cooper at the beginning of January 1980. Derrick Parker came in February and finally, Bobby Downes in March.
I will never forget it, I went an witnessed a right thumping although Tommy Graham did hit the cross bar & nearly grabbed a consolation & then I returned to my van to find a flat tyre coupled with a parking ticket , that day of doom has been etched in my memory ever since , talk about treading on a robin I think I stood on a nest full !
Tommy Graham & Derek Bell were our strikers alongside Allan Clarke. David Speedie was a midfielder for us, making his debut in the 0-0 home draw against Wigan, October 1978.
