Was always going to be this way. Lied about it all until the flights, hotels, tickets etc were all paid for

I can see there being lots of fans wanting to be saved from executions by their respective governments too. Might be a bit OTT but I can see the Qatar government wanting to stamp authority after all the press.

I know Blatter and Platini have been exonerated, but every man and his dog knows this was awarded due to some serious backhanders

They have had almost 12 years to reverse the decision, but no they couldn't be seen to be backing down or millions would have to be repaid.

Any fan going over there, thinking they will be safe from the Qatar backward laws will be in for a massive shock

This tournament is a recipe for disaster

It was always going to be this way. They shouldn’t have lied about it but I think the rule itself is fair enough. We wouldn’t allow thousands of fans here all doing illegal drugs just because they are legal/popular in their own country.

Do you think any fans will be executed? We wouldn't allow fans to be executed over here but we'd have to respect it over there.

Where do you draw the line on respecting the culture?

The definition of 'culture' is clearly different in your world than mine. Intolerance to the point of applying the death penalty to people who are biologically pre-disposed to same sex relationships, based on religious doctrines from ancient history has nothing to do with 'culture'. Both Christians and Muslims refer to their respective 'manuals' i.e. the Bible and the Koran as the 'Word of God' omitting the fact that they were actually written by men! Much of the content of both is interpreted ( distorted) to suit the fact that it is used to control the populations.

I think you're twisting what I put to suit your own narrative. My post was merely a speculative question. One could argue a flippant remark. Whereas yours is some sought of arrogant attack.

Speaking as one who enjoys a beer & more than the occasional single malt I cannot understand the fuss , if it is a dry trip then so be it , there are countless reasons why I would not go to that country but being denied a tipple for a few days is not one of them .

Can’t see it personally with all the eyes of the world on them, unless it was for a major crime like murder etc.
That said I can also picture a group of lads having a few drinks in the fan zone and seeing how far they can push certain things for a laugh.

I genuinely don’t know where to draw the lines sometimes. I thought respect was bilateral, but it doesn’t always feel that way. Doing this literally days before, doesn’t feel very respectful.

This is just days after a Norwegian reporter, with full press accreditation, was physically manhandled by the local stasi, for daring to film in a public space.

Same here - Im not going and have many reasons for not doing so - but the lack of Alcohol isn't an issue - That in itself wouldn't stop me going if I had been seriously planning to go.

Pretty sure they wouldnt be executed - they would be deported though and maybe given a few lashes to deter any others trying it

Think exonerated is a bit strong mate. They got a not guilty in Switzerland. Quelle surpreese. For a Swiss person who led an institution based in Switzerland I wouldn't have expected anything less from a Swiss court. Now....what to spend the interest on that Nazi loot from? Dilemmas eh?

Ouch! Not sure where the "arrogant attack"' bit comes in. If your comment was 'flippant' fair enough (so was mine) , but you have to admit, whilst 'culture' is the correct terminology for the way of life for a society, a repressive regime such as exists in Qatar does not really equate to being 'cultured'. It was in no way a dig at you (the usual problem of typed comments without hearing the tone it would been delivered in 'face to face')

Oh! and re your autotype... "sort " not "sought";)
