I thought our performance against Iran was breathtaking at times. The kind of fast decisive football you rarely see, and not just from one or two players but most of the team, and the subs. It was dismissed. Iran were crap apparently. So crap they then beat Wales 2-0. I then watched the Argentina KSA game. The favourites versus the whipping boys. And the whipping boys won. Within the sport, genuinely historical stuff. I even thought the game last night had a lot of merit. It was fast paced and physical and yet absent from all the things I hate about football like diving and play acting. We were below par in terms of skill but the effort from both sides, the fitness levels and the fair play made it a really good advert for the sport. And up to the last minute it could have gone either way.
I enjoyed the France and Spain games. Think it always gets better when you reach the knockout stages. .
I think it’s largely been tripe! But now we’ve got the first round of matches out of the way I’m hoping the more jeopardy and there more teams having to go out and win games will liven it up. For example Iran going for it against Wales meant the 2nd half of that game was a good watch.
Italia 90 for me. This one, empty seats, nil nils and pre-match commentary about everything other than football. It'll not go down in the memory.
Argentina 1978 is the first one that really sticks in my mind. The total football the Dutch played was something else. Italia 90 takes some beating though. This one not really grabbing me yet but let’s see when we get to the knock out stages
I think this one has got a long way to go yet, before we can think about classing it as one of the best. And I hear they are making it a ridiculous number of teams in the next Finals, in '26. I think they had the numbers right when they extended it to 24 teams in the Finals, from Espana '82 onwards Remember it used to be just 16 teams, and it was a bit of prestige to qualify in those days as group winners.
Best for me 78 and that Argentina team Kempes, lique, ardiles, pasarella this World Cup will get nowhere near the quality of that team.
Spot on. BBC and ITV are trying to outdo one another for who can do the most virtue signalling instead of just talking about the game that they are there to talk about.
A lot depends on the luck of the games youve watched. The only two stinkers I’ve watched are us v USA & Uruguay - Korea. I’ve seen most of the good games & avoided most of the 0-0’s. Us, Spain & France (both times) we’re good to watch. Argies - Saudi Arabia was great. Really enjoyed Canada - Belgium. Looking forward to Spain - Germany & Uruguay - Portugal. There should then be lots of good games in the 3rd set of group fixtures due to how much will be riding on them. Win or bust for many.
What did we all think of the Wales keeper getting sent off, which is the only red card so far. To be honest I think the ref bottled it, as it was blatant and shouldn't even have even gone to Var.
Isn't everyone's favourite World Cup the one from their early or mid-teens? For me, France '98 brings back the best memories. So many great players in their prime; Zidane, Ronaldo, Suker, Batistuta, Bergkamp, the Laudrup brothers... My favourite teams all did quite well, even though I was gutted to see Nigeria get trashed by Denmark in the round of 16. Sunday Oliseh's goal against Spain is still one of the greatest World Cup moments for me: USA '94 was good too, but since so many games were played at night (Finnish time), it wasn't that memorable. Maradona broke my heart and for a young me it was a tough and truly sad moment to see my childhood hero like that. On top of that there was the murder of Andres Escobar of Colombia, and the final was quite terrible too. It was nice to see Sweden do so well (they beat Bulgaria in the bronze medal game). I bet there have been great World Cups after that, I've watched nearly every game in most tournaments, but none of them have had the same magic for me. As for this year's World Cup, I just find it even more difficult to get excited about it for multiple reasons. Argentina vs Mexico and Spain vs Germany are the only games that I've watched from the beginning to the end.
