I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt on this one. He's been part of the coaching set up at Leicester, Celtic and the Ivory Coast national team, but probably wants a managerial gig. I'd imagine he'd happily take a lower paid position to get on the ladder so to speak. Very risky from their point of view though. Inexperienced coach with them in a relegation battle.

I'm not sure that's how it works. There will be a severance fee agreed as part of the contract I would imagine.
Knowing Wigan's track record with finances, the severance fee will be greater than his 3.5 year contract.
