That run by the Australian left back was better than any run Messi made.

Thankfully they're without Gueye & obviously Mane... But gunna be a very tough game, they'll be at us all game from the off. Koulibaly has probably been the defender of the tournament so far? Up there with Souttar & possibly even Maguire

Indeed , but it would be nice (for him) if it got some attention beyond Messi.

That's why it annoyed me when Murphy mentioned taking him off for next game, as though the match was won on 70th minute. The Argies were bloody lucky at the end.

Messi and Ronaldo have both been great players but neither can match Maradona. I hated the cheating git but his ability and achievements with Argentina and in galvanising Napoli to their only two Italian titles ever put him on a different level.

It worked for Barcelona for quite a long time though!

This current Argentina side does rely a lot on Messi indeed, but I don't think it's as bad as it has been before. Still, I agree with @wakeyred that Argentina would never have qualified from their group without him. It's crazy that Messi's role in the team is so huge, yet no one can still stop him. I have a feeling that the Netherlands will be too tough for Argentina in the next round, but they're quite unpredictable as well.

    Read this this morning ...

Former England defender Rio Ferdinand said on BBC One: "The best individual performance from a player at this World Cup. It was almost god-like. I've not seen anything like this."

    God-like!!?? WTF!!!

Against an Australia side who are the equivalent of a mid-table championship team at best.

You can't really compare club football and international football though. I think that's a bit harsh for the Australians anyway, I think. They may not have big stars in their team, but they proved that they're no pushovers in this tournament. And as for having no big stars, it's also a fact that these players don't even get an equal opportunity to play in the "big leagues" just because of their nationality.

I agree it's not an exact science, as club sides are generally more cohesive thanks to spending far more time playing together. But the number of Aussies who have played in the top leagues in the world at one time or another would suggest that they are not overlooked if they're good enough. The fact is that the current Australia side is made up of players from their domestic league, plus a good chunk of the squad comes from the Championship and the Scottish Premier League. On that basis, I still think that my "mid-table championship" assessment is accurate. Or maybe even a bit generous.
