Trouble brewing again for Coventry, Mr Ashley has served them notice and told them to return all keys and access cards and remove any equipment https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/63858805
All pro clubs have suffered at one time or another, but, Coventry really do seem to get kick from pillar to post more than most, I really feel for their supporters.
Worse than a worthless team and worthless land you can't do anything with. Neither any good without the other?
Owner doing what he wants with his own property. The issue here isn't Ashley it is Coventry City as they always seem to find bother.
That’s a bit unfair. Coventry City had an agreed lease for the next 10 years New owner of the stadium has unilaterally terminated the lease and presented them with a new one which is only for 1 year and on worse terms. Not sure on the legality of that. For domestic tenants that would be illegal but I’ve no idea if commercial tenants have the same protection It’s certainly immoral but that’s Ashley for you. The issue is most definitely Ashley.
Is he doing this as leverage to try and take over the football club on the cheap? Where have I seen that before?
It says licence, not lease and that's a key distinction. Any lease would have remained valid upon a sale of the freehold interest to Frasers. A licence, on the other hand, is personal to the contracting parties and doesn't bind successors in title. So at the minute it sounds like Coventry have no right to occupy. They might want to ask questions about why they agreed to only a licence in the first place!
Interesting - so that makes sense but as you say why only a licence that is a good question. If you are right with your analysis Coventry lost the right to occupy the stadium on the day the sale was completed which seems to be a very dangerous risk to take as its now proving - someone has some explaining to do. Maybe I was being unfair to Ashley and he just offered a quick rest of season licence to allow the club to continue and then give time to negotiate a proper long term one going forwards. I dont know what is worse about the proposal apart from the length, but if the previous licence was specific to Wasps it looks like Coventry City don't have a leg to stand on
In 1998, I went to the Premier League game at Coventry, at that they were a long-standing top tier team that owned their ground close to the city centre with a decent following. Then they decided to "cash-in" on the value of the land at Highfield Road and look at them since then, absolute disaster. Highfield Road wasn't the best ground in the country but it was ok, very poor decisions for many years. I used to work for Jaguar and many of my workmates were City fans, many season ticket holders - I don't think any of them go any more.
I'm certain there were some posters on here claiming a Mike Ashley takeover at Barnsley would be a positive thing to happen!
