We lost to Croatia after going 1-0 up and it was all Southgate's fault. I presumed Brazil, having just done the same, must have employed Southgate as manager.
I don't agree. The fifth penalty is subject to the most pressure. You want your coolest head taking that one.
We lost to Croatia having handed them the initiative for an hour and having stopped playing ourselves. Not sure Brazil did that or what the relevant comparison is.
A team easy to hate. Dancing after a goal like they have won the tournament. High fiving each other at half time in extra time today as if the game was already won. Beyond arrogant and entitled.
Was at Brazil v Costa Rica in 2018. Neymar was being a proper whining tool all match, and the Brazil fans were the same. Impatient and entitled. A few days later I saw Argentina in the same stadium and the contrast couldn't have been greater. Insane support, even when they were playing absolutely wnak and possibly heading out.
Think the commentators are often as bad. My daughter who last couple of years took an interest in tournaments, couldn’t believe it when I told her how long it was since Brazil had won the WC
I see they've left Shearer, Lineker & Rio for the Argies game so they can play with each others cocks over Messi. The other media darlings are out, humbled not quite like 2014 but when will the British media learn?
Messi is a footballers footballer. He does things none of those pundits could ever do. No different to how we drool over Ronnie Glavin.
But it doesn't matter if you lose on the 5th penalty or the 4th penalty, you want to maximise your chances of winning. Once you have your 5 takers they will all have a probability of scoring a penalty, and the only variable is pressure. Some will react better than others. If you put your players who can best handle the pressure in the positions with the most pressure then you maximise your chances of winning the shootout.
Worth noting that our team was a lot worse back then. I don’t think it was us handing them the initiative, it was more that a world class midfield took control of the game against a midfield of Henderson, Alli & Lingard.
Well it does if you have, arguably, your best penalty taker going fifth, and you're out before he gets a chance to have a kick.
No it doesn't. If Neymar goes 4th and scores and then Marquinhos misses 5th it makes absolutely no difference. At the end of the day it's the total out of 5 and you want to maximise the expected value of your 5 penalties.
Let's say these are your 5 takers and their probability of scoring a penalty and in brackets their probability of scoring a penalty under massive pressure. Penalties 4 and 5 are the ones which are potentially subject to massive pressure. Which order do you put them in? 1. 95% (90%) 2. 80% (70%) 3. 55% (45%) 4. 85% (70%) 5. 90% (60%)
