Just for balance, I think he's a top human being and obviously media savvy, but a top manager/coach? Not even close.
Haven't clicked on the video but given the title of it I couldn't disagree more. Sacking the most successful England manager since Alf Ramsey would be utterly ridiculous.
Every game matters and we have reached the latter stages of 2 tournaments and a quarter final. The other teams are also trying to win. Only 1 team will win the world Cup. In knockout Football you can play well and lose and its all over as we saw Saturday night. The sense of entitlement amongst many England fans is staggering.
It's not entitlement at all it's the pure frustration watching a Southgate team struggle against top sides, his record is abysmal, with regards to the Semi final and final, there will never be a more stark indication of a man utterly out of his depth, he bottled it on both occasions.
I was just about to post the same. Too many fans suckered in by the self style best league in the world and thinking the players are world beaters. I've just done a quick count on number of Champions League appearances for the starting 11's on Saturday: England 261, France 546. Until the players get more exposure to regular top quality European football then I think it will always be a struggle for any England manager.
Yes Italy and Croatia were so poor they were just there to be beaten. Im sure they sat in the dressing room after saying "Thank **** Southgate is so poor" I'm sure many better managers are out there and who knows England may get one. But I'm really not sure what some people expect. 31 teams go home from the world Cup not winning it. This desperate desire to suggest the only reason we aren't world and European Champions is down to 1 man is just plain ludicrous.
I think it's more basic than that I'm afraid, most would agree that the group of players in the most recent squad are the best we've had for donkey's years, but, unfortunately, led by a man of no discernable coaching talent. Southgate's managerial pedigree is, alas, non-existent.
I agree about the Croatia and Italy games, he was too negative after we took the lead in both. They were definitely wasted opportunities. His team selections in this WC have been more adventurous and I wouldn’t blame Southgate at all for our exit. I’m ok with him continuing through to Euro 24 but if he did decide to stand down it wouldn’t upset me greatly.
And yet, that is exactly the case. Again his record when up against sides of high standing is abject.
A lot of teams struggle against top sides, hence the term top sides. Yes, he made a mess of the Euros final, but he got us there, with many other higher profile coaches have failed to do in the past. There’s nothing about this team that screams that we ‘should’ be beating France. And in the end we were edged out thanks to an own goal and a missed penalty
Just listen to some interviews with ex England players about Capello. Keeping a happy atmosphere when you spend so little time with the players is massive thing. I've seen the stats about our record against teams above us in the rankings. It's poor for sure, almost as if it's hard to beat teams who are better than you. Anyway you think he should be sacked and I say that's ridiculous. We obviously won't agree.
No we won't and I respect your opinion, but he's given it a go and come up short, he's made a lot of progress with regards media relations and the tournament wellbeing of his players, but it's time for a change in my opinion, the bottom line is simple, PLAY TO WIN.
He's lost one knockout tie in normal time, against the reigning world champions, and we deserved to win it and lost due to bad luck/small margins. We've had 20 years of managers looking utterly clueless. Before him nobody had got us to a major semi final in 20 years, or a final since 66. He did both back to back and we look a more cohesive unit than at any time since 96. But aye, let's sack him.
I honestly couldn't give a toss. The best manager England never had was Brian Clough but his gob was too big. Can't imagine who would replace Southgate just now, his record is pretty good to be honest when you compare it with every manager since Alf Ramsey, the only one that comes close is Bobby Robson. For what it's worth, it wouldn't surprise me if Southgate resigns.
It is widely regarded that his negativity lost us those games you refer to. Just think about this, with this genius approach to high level football, what top club throughout the world would take Gareth Southgate as their manager/coach if he were to leave the England job?
Lets be fair in our entire history we have only had one successful manager so its a poisoned chalice for anyone taking the job , the only person who should decide Southgate"s future his himself , his track record does not deserve for him to be sacked but he will know the pressure the job brings & he will know what it is like to gets so near but yet so far & when the dusts settles he can decide then if he feels the experience he has got can propel him to greater heights or he might think I have had a go & given it my best shot it is now time to let someone else have a go, but I do think he has earned the right to choose.
How did he lose us the French game? Did he tell Rashford to hit the post with his penalty against Italy? Club management is an entirely different kettle of fish. When you have a limited time with a group of players it's as much about managing the personalities and trying to knit them together as it is about in depth tactical analysis. He's an outstanding man manager and has the full respect and buy in of all the squad and that counts for a hell of a lot. I don't rate Southgate at all as a club manager but that has no bearing on his ability to manage England. Fabio Capello was an outstanding club manager, but look at his time managing England.
