I don’t know if I even want to tell this.. A dump truck of some sort was passing through the village, close to the shop & George & Dragon pub, where cars are parked & it goes to single lane. Truck’s on opposite side. Unsecured tailgate swings open & hits an elderly couple on the pavement. Right by where I live.. I was just leaving the shop, didn’t see it but heard it. Neighbours were already attending. I rushed home for blankets & a chair. Freak accident, but very bad. Fortunately a couple of trained first aiders, one a nurse, were on the scene quickly. Ambulance called for, 2 actually, after much effing & blinding by my neighbour Gillian, repeatedly answering stupid questions.. Bobbies arrived first & closed the road, which we had already done anyway. Ambulances took 40 minutes to arrive. I saw injuries, but won't describe. Just very bad. Lorry had parked up further along. Middle aged driver bloke, still wearing an England top. Older vehicle, unbranded.. I went home & let the emergency service people do there thing. The elderly couple had regained consciousness. Yes, a freak accident, but this road is a death trap. People use it as a rat run, built for horses & wagons, not heavy vehicles. That was 2pm. Road still closed as I write this.. I went back out & took non intrusive photos. To bear witness & report to the Wentworth estate & Parish Council. In an attempt to do something about this fcking road. Then I was accused of voyeurism. FFS? I’m a local pedestrian with an elderly rescue terrier. It’s dangerous just leaving the house. & the ultimate pi55 take is, they even took our bus service away.. Fck it, I’m off to America next year anyway..
Sounds absolutely horrendous let's hope the couple make a complete recovery that road is certainly not built to take the amount of traffic that users it. A weight restriction maybe it's like the road through Wombwell woods the size of vehicle that use it is ridiculous think it's got worse since the use of sat navs shortest routes doesn't take into account the suitability of the road.
Best thing they could do with that road is out double yellows down both sides of it and if needed provide extra parking on one of the fields for the residents. I hope the old couple make a good recovery and it shows what kind of person you are yet again, too many people would walk on by not run home for blankets. Fcu.k em saying you're being intrusive, YOU know why you took the photos and that's all that matters. Now get sat down and let yourself calm down a little and try to get over/come to terms with what you've seen a little.
Not anymore no. I’ve turned isolation into a fine art..I’ll be in Long Island NY, Christmas next year, with my beautiful Mrs C, so why do I give 2 fcks?
Good on you. Are you putting yourself in that old couples shoes thinking it could have been you? If you are. You weren't and it wasn't. You sound in shock to me.
I’m fine mate, thank you. I’ve witnessed some bad things, but it still shocks me. We don’t think they’re local. Just on a visit to an otherwise pretty, interesting old village. I was going to look for ID, but was correctly advised to wait for the Police.
Honestly mate, it’s dangerous just walking old Ted. Cars mount the kerb in such a hurry.. & beep me. W4nkers..
We stayed a couple of nights in the George and Dragon earlier in the year. Probably first time I've been since we used to drink (underage) in the same pub! I couldn't believe the amount of traffic that now uses that road, especially early morning!
A beautiful village, spoiled by the volume of traffic. I'm glad you're physically okay, but sad at what you've been through. All the best, Paul.
Can’t see the refurbishment of Wentworth Woodhouse, part of which I believe is going to be a luxury hotel, improving matters. Not at all.
I have been informed the lady is the sister of a long standing red season ticket holder. The gent is a retired accountant. Both have sustained life changing injuries and are in Sheffield hospital. My thoughts are with them & family at this difficult time.
I’m just liking your post to acknowledge, mate. Thanks for the update. If you feel you could send any more details, please do via private message. I think myself & neighbours would like to send something with our best wishes.x
The big house is going through a huge restoration project. Which is great, but adds to the volume of heavy vehicles. On top of that there’s tv & film crews using the house for locations. As well as the regular tourist visitors. The trust that runs the house invited villagers for a meeting to discuss the impact. That was 5 years ago, with a plan this would be a regular thing. Nothing else, since. The Fitzwilliams own plenty of land close to the M1, I suggested a park & ride shuttle bus for visitors to the house. No reply..
Is the college still derelict or has it been pulled down as part of the renovation. I haven't walked up there since March 2020 during lockdown.
