Wasn't there something on here about pulling the swiming pool building down to make a car park?

I know they have been taking down the 1960s gym & pool buildings.
I haven’t been in the grounds for a year. (Too far for my old dogs). The college residential buildings might stay. They are used for emergency services training & technically belong to Rotherham Council who manage the park. :)

I don’t drive, but apparently a couple of years ago, the main road from Rotherham, through Nether Haugh towards Barnsley was closed for works. Traffic diverted through Wentworth, then Elsecar & Harley. Definitely got busier as drivers wised up to a scenic short cut.
& I understand sat navs direct people from the M1 to A1 through the village, instead of using the purpose built Dearne Valley bypass.?
It pi55es me off & has given me an irrational dislike of cars & motorists. Especially because they cut our bus service which myself & other villagers depended on..
I’m going to shut my gob, before I start swearing again..

My sat nav (or my phone) has never taken me through Wentworth to get from the M1 to the A1. It's significantly slower and a few miles longer too so I don't think any decent satnav would do that.

Also I passed a bus in Wentworth today. Service 44 to Rotherham?

They do need to do something though. It's dangerous with all the residents cars lining the main road. The estate has enough money to provide off street parking to residents so that should be a priority. Next move for me would be an 'access only' weight limit through the village. There's no need for HGVs to go through except for the few that actually need to access the village itself. I'd make it access to the actual village only too. Any HGV needing to access the garden centre or the little courtyard of units on the bend would be able to do that from the other side where the roads wider and there aren't as many pedestrians.

Last thing I'd do is a zebra crossing outside the carpark. The vast majority of people who park up want to cross over the road so make a safe way to do it.

Liking that post feels wrong but I hope you know what I mean. Liking the last part really.

I'm extremely fortunate to have never witnessed anything like that in my life. Not sure how I'd cope to be honest. Are you sure you're doing ok yourself?

Everything in the village is old; they should pull most of it down and build a nice new adequate road through so that coaches can bring hoardes of people to Wentworth Woodhouse. Maybe some of the sugar plantation wealth could pay for it.

There’s a fantastic book about the house called Black Diamonds by Catherine Bailey. All about the Fitzwilliams.

Does it mention plantations and slavery?

yes, just read it - all the Fitzwilliam sons were called William !
There were loads of male heirs a few generations ago but now no direct (legitimate!) male descendent.

The only living direct descendant is the wife of Jacob Rees-Mogg.

Their main source of wealth was coal mining.

How did they get their wealth before coal mining?
