    I think Oppenheimer was aware of the motives behind his scientific research.

    And if we accept religion has been used to suppress half the population throughout history, then what would have oppressed it had there been no religion? Because something would have.

    Yes something else would likely have been used I don't disagree. That doesn't make religion any better it's still awful. It claims moral authority then uses threats of hell to try and imposed its beliefs on others. If we take the Bible as one example its full of hate, sexism, Racism and a casual level of genocide.
    Oppenheimer was a person, he is not science.
    Science and Religion are not the same at all. Science is by its very nature not a belief system. Of course Scientists can do bad things.
    Religion is made up nonsense. It has and continues to do a lot of harm. It's just silly.
    Science is nothing more than a method for furthering understanding.
