You can probably count Bowie as he was performing in the last 40 years though even if - in my view - his best work was in the '70s ( or 69 if you include this album. Arguably not a band though
I dont know who I would pick as my best but most of my favourites were around in the 70s as well
Bowie would be on the list as would Queen, Rush, Barclay James Harvest and Led Zeppelin
If I had to pick a band who did their best work in the last 40 years maybe Dire Straits

IMO massively underrated, but superb songwriters on unusual subjects and great live performers. The Men They Couldn't Hang. 40 years since I first saw them live, and still the main band played in the car.

I loved "Waiting for Bonaparte" and "Silvertown" as a young'un. Lucky enough to see them live once.

I'm surprised nobody has suggested Pixies yet. Or Sonic Youth - particularly the 85-92 period (Daydream Nation, Whitey Album, Goo, Dirty, etc). Or REM.

Lots of fantastic bands from the last 40 years.

In no particular order I'd go for Bowie (stuff I like probably too early tbf), The Jam, The Smiths, Stone Roses, New Order, James, Oasis, Echo & The Bunnymen......so many in the last 40 years.

For me, it is Rush. Supremely talented without the need to show off. Constantly evolved from their 1974 debut and finished with one of their best albums in years.

I couldn't agree more, I saw them in my youth on the Signals tour 1983 and they were brilliant.

I was fortunate to see them at their last ever concert in Toronto. I just happened to be on holiday and I discovered that they were playing the ACC to end a great career.
Great send off for Neil Peart.

Extending the period to cover my time (I'm old) I've been fortunate to see many live performers. The Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Yardbirds (with Paige and Beck), Casey Jones (with Clapton), Dylan, Cohen, Springsteen, Bowie, Elton John, Beach Boys, John Mayall (with Mick Taylor), The Fairports, The Eagles, SAHB and a load more from later. The best live band I've seen, three times, were The Pirates with arguably their best line up of the incomparable Mick green, Jonny Spence and Frank Farley.

I saw them that tour as well - how 3 guys can make that much depth of sound is beyond belief - was supposed to see them at DeeSide on the Wirral but it burned down so had to treck to the NEC instead - one of the best live bands I've seen

I was at the NEC as well, I was hooked when one of my mates bought Hemispheres - remember listening to it a lot in the school holiday then someone told me to try 2112 .....
For some reason stopped getting their albums after Signals and didnt see them again after that tour - almost went to see them in the 02 on the Time Machine tour but could only get tickets at silly prices - think I had missed the initial sale and I wasn't paying £150 for a seat at the back from get me in - dont know what the face value was. Wish I had known in time to get a proper ticket

Space Oddity and Station to Station are my favourite Bowie albums.

Space Oddity is rated poorly and only gets 3.29 on Rate Your Music, compared to Station to Station's 4.12. Which i find unfair.

I too could easily pick 6 from Space Oddity for a playlist. Space Oddity the song would not be one of them.

Almost right then! You introduced me to a few over the years, best being Kusworth and BJ Cole, after he did his bit on an as yet unreleased album…

Thinking about it, I once saw you performing with Kusworth, Nikki Sudden and Darrell Bath. Doesn’t seem that long ago, but you are the only one left standing, and you did your best to join them!
