In Pontefract there's Chequerfield but that's just the name of a housing estate. Penistone is a separate town though so why's it Barnsley? Is it just the borough?
It’s Barnsley council that I paid my council tax to, never really understood why ppl claimed it to be sheffield
Well the metropolitan borough of Barnsley is Barnsley… Pontefract and Castleford are in the Metropolitan Borough of Wakefield. Which spreads all the way to South Emsall in the South East, Ossett in the West and Knottingley in the East
The Northern border must be between Allerton Bywater and Castleford. I know that because patients brought into hospital by patient transport from Allerton Bywater are brought in by Leeds drivers.
It's part of the metropolitan borough of Barnsley, like Holmfirth is to Kirklees and Garforth to Leeds etc etc. Not sure why people find it so confusing?
A postcode and address doesn’t legally define where a place is. They’re simply created and assigned to work with Royal Mail’s infrastructure for deliveries - that’s it! Penistone has a Sheffield address and postcode because it’s closest to Stocksbridge Delivery Office. Thurnscoe, Bolton, and Goldthorpe all have a Rotherham address and postcode because they’re closest to Manvers Delivery Office. There’s no point sending Mail and parcels for those areas to Barnsley Delivery Office when there are other Delivery Offices that are better placed geographically. They’re all still towns and ‘villages’ within the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley.
I do wonder where the Penistone boundary is though? Springvale, Oxspring, Thurlstone, Cubley for example, all neighbour with Penistone. Everybody I know who lives in Thurlstone says they're from Thurlstone, not Penistone. There's others as well. Never quite sure, beyond comparing font size on Google Maps
If you ever use postcode finder though, Sheffield is almost always used. I know this, because every time I have to use it, I go in and manually change Sheffield to Barnsley
If he lost his birth certificate he'd have to go to Barnsley to get a new copy & not Sheffield, he's a Barnsley lad.
Wombwell, Hoyland, Royston, Penistone were all towns in the West Riding near Barnsley until local government reorganisation created the Barnsley Metropolitan Borough which swallowed up these towns and other villages like Dodworth, Worsbrough, Darfield, Goldthorpe etc thereby increasing Barnsley population from 75,000 to 225,000 overnight.
There’s a clip on Twitter, that did the rounds a few years since, of him on England duty, and Kyle Walker is ribbing him about being from Sheffield. Stones tells him, proudly, that he is from Barnsley, not Sheffield. Straight from the horse’s mouth.
I used to work in Sherburn in elmet, which is classed as N. Yorkshire. But for some weird reason it still has an LS Leeds postcode.
When I was a boy, nobody regarded Penistone as being part of Barnsley. It became part of the Metropolitan Borough Of Barnsley, as part of local government reorganisation in 1974. The border of the County Borough Of Barnsley, which existed from 1913 until then, comprised largely areas fairly close to the town centre and had a population of just over 70,000. Wombwell, Hoyland, Elsecar etc., were likewise not really considered to be part of Barnsley. They were in the large West Riding Authority. Barnsley, as a county borough, was independent of the West Riding, and had its own fire service, ambulance service etc.
