    Watching Newcastle v Fulham

Reid for Fulham has stamped on newcastle defender trippiers foot and VAR have given a penalty. Bizarre.

And didn’t give one for the pull just before, which I’ve seen players booked for in centre circle

the tech is absolutely fine. it's just cameras. it's the clowns who make the rules, that's the problem. same with the offside rule.

Don't think I've ever seen a penalty ruled out for a double hit

And another thing that’s just come to me,,,, I thought the ball had to travel at least one circumference to be in play. No doubt another rule change that passed me by.

I thought it was a pen in real time, the replay confirmed it for me.

Will always amaze me how we all see the game differently.

Yeah I thought it was a penalty for a trip as well. Correct VAR decision.

initially i agree, looked a pen. On replay though I can’t believe it was given, reed clearly initiated contact.

the ref didn’t make a clear and obvious error however that’s the mistake here,

Played for and got. VAR should have cancelled it out. Clever work by Toney mind, even if he cheated imo.

Should’ve given a free kick against Toney for grabbing the defender’s arm imo.

Using technology brings in all kinds of anomalies. Rule makers have made a complete hash of the offside and handball rules, in pursuit of consistency, when really we should just accept that different refs will interpret things differently on different days.

Video refs causes problems in other sports as well. In rugby league, you could get the ball after a foul or knock on, run 90 metres and if you score, it goes to the video ref who then disallows the try and the other team gets possession. If you’re tackled a metre short, you keep possession a metre from the line and can then score without it being checked. So, the use of the video creates times where you’re better off not scoring!

What VAR has proven is that refs are **** either with or without a monitor.

    Simple VAR rule.

A decision benefiting the home team at Old Trafford must stand.

I’m still gobsmacked that the first goal wasn’t offside but I think technically under the way they have rewritten the rules the goal does stand. But it’s really dumb

But the fact Akanji would have had to manoeuvre around Rashford means he was interfering though? May as well just keep him miles off side, boot it to him and round circles around the ball whilst not touching it

Yes, according to the laws as they currently stand, after being re-written dozens of times trying to get it consistent, it was not offside.

But any reasonable, impartial football person must surely think that, if that was not offside, then the offside law is wrong and needs yet another rewrite. Either that is offside, or the laws of the game are an ass.

Yes whichever numpty rewrote the laws is clearly an ass and didnt consider that a player can have a huge influence on the game without actually touching the ball
The law in the good old days had its faults too - I remember goals being disallowed due to a player standing offside of the other side of the pitch or even in some cases lying down injured, being flagged. It really cant be that hard to have a rule that deems you offside if you are offside when the ball is played and then run towards the ball.

I cant work out how VAR can be so misused in football - The Newcastle penalties were a study in how not to use it I only saw them on MotD2 last light but the one given against trippier as mentioned in the OP was clearly a foul and at least a yellow the other way as the fulham player went over the ball and scraped down Trippiers shin then stamped on his boot - I think the problem is the when the VAR numpty tells the ref to take another look he just assumes he missed something and from one angle it looks like he might have but from every other angle its clear what really happened but I guess he wasnt shown those.
Yet just before there was a clear penalty and red card and neither the ref or VAR thought it was
I suppose the only saving thing in VAR's favour was disallowing Mitrovics goal for a clear double kick - I assume that was VAR and not the ref on his own
