You could stick Hartlepool United in the Premier !eague for a season and when they went down to the Championship they'd be hot favourites to go back up again within a couple of years. The situation is ridiculous.
But they would have earned it by going up through the leagues No different to Bournemouth, Brentford or Burnley who were all 4th Division relegation fodder not that long ago.I agree the money handed out for failure is ridiculous which is why most relegated clubs from the Premier these days are in the frame for an instant return.
It is what the premier league have always wanted. In essence a closed shop providing a massive advantage for relegated clubs to bounce back up. Unless a club in the championship are either bank rolled (Bournemouth/Brentford) or strike it lucky with a team they can hold on to then there will be the same 25 clubs rotating year in year out. Should the gamble fail then you end up like Sunderland/ Wednesday/Derby.
Interesting article on PNE's financial situation, losing £400K per week, doesn't sound sustainable ... https://www.lep.co.uk/sport/footbal...-of-love-says-football-finance-expert-3994086
I meant if they were plucked from where they are now to the Prem. My point being that, like you say, the parachute payments are destroying real competition.
Lots of money. Obscene amounts even for failure. Helps so much to buy a team good enough for a lower league.
Been subsidised for some time by owner. Interesting point was about how most clubs in PL lose money & the belief of getting to the promised land is not true.
Didn't Bournemouth go up the first time with debt of about £20m? Not it sure that's earning promotion.
Always remember Phil Gartside of Bolton tried to get the PL to agree to a league with no relegation when they were in it.
I remember Brighton did it as well, they spent a few years racking up heavy debts when trying to go up to the Prem. And with the blatant intention of clearing their debts when they went up, so why are clubs allowed to do this. Does the financial fair play thing still exist, if it ever did to be honest!.
