But surely the correct player should get a ban retrospectively

Does it work like that? I've an odd feeling it doesn't. This could be a different situation, and under different rules, but we played Man Utd in the league cup circa 2009, and the referee booked the wrong Da Silva brother. Iirc the yellow card was rescinded, but not apportioned to the correct player afterwards. As I say, I don't know if its different with yellow cards, or whether the rules have changed.

I dont know but for sure there is a difference between yellow and red cards.
In any sane world the ban would be transferred to the player who committed the offence. It was a clear punch and clearly violent conduct
I would have thought regardless of any appeal the ref could view the video and admit to getting the wrong player I think thats happened before
Of course sane world and Football disciplinary procedures dont always go hand in hand.

Apparently the ban does get passed over, guessing because it's a straight red.

Remember the Morgan/ Hume incident, no retrospective action could be taken because Morgan was shown a yellow card

Aye, a yellow card is seen as punishment enough for some reason. Drogba was booked once for goading Burnley fans, and couldn't be given any retrospective ban because its deemed as undermining the referee's decision.

Even their local referee. Postponing a rivals match to build up their fixture backlog.
