Watching this on BBC 4 or iplayer. Telling the story of the fall of communism and rise of the oligarchs and Putin. Told through unseen footage and some explanation subtitles. It's fascinating.
It's worth giving it a try, there's not too many. They had some batshit crazy ideas. They devised something called "the plan" which everyone had to work to. One village communal laundry had a refit which created 2 tons of scrap metal. So those monitoring the plan said we like that so you must produce 2 tons every year. The village soon had none to give, so they had to buy or steal it or face a big fine!
