Non footie. Greenhouse repairs.

Anyone know someone who would replace a number of large broken panes of glass in our old greenhouse please? Thank

I hear there's a couple of Glaziers at Manchester United... apparently they don't come highly recommended tho

 

It might be worth doing it yourself if they are easy to get to, they just clip in and out, dead simple. We bought a few panes for £20 total off Facebook Marketplace, they seem to pretty much be a standard size so easy to find people selling them cheaply. Just make sure you wrap them in something like an old carpet for transporting… or drive really carefully over bumps and wear thick gloves when handling.

 

Measure the size you require then pop down to Barnsley Glass on Brinkman St, they'll cut them to size and you can fit them yourself. Bobs your uncle.

 

A pane to deal with and easily seen through I heard

 

Tape some see through plastic sheeting to the broken panes

 

If you search online there are many companies that will cut to size solid sheet polycarbonate, twinwall polycarbonate( from 4mm to 10mm thickness) and will deliver, yes it is more expensive but it is stronger,less brittle and gives your greenhouse better heat retention and safer to handle.

Have you thought about this.

Polycarbonate is a clear plastic that is 250 times stronger than glass - and round half the weight. This means that polycarbonate glazing is virtually unbreakable and easier to work with. polycarbonate beats glass hands down for greenhouses and cold frames.
Easier to work with and costs less.

 

It discolours though and turns yellow, which glass doesn’t.

I'm not an expert JD. The mrs is the gardening/growing expert. So i read up on things like that. And stick to mowing the lawn and washing up.
There are pros and cons in both materials. Easy to look up if anyone is considering one or the other. The consensus seems to favour polycarbonate. Better light distribution. Heat retention. Cost.
Not as nice aesthetically. And easy to scratch. But easily maintainable.

Probably the main thing that would put me off would be the negativity around plastic production. But maybe the lifespan would ease that one. Not throwaway stuff so to speak.

I'm switching over to polycarbonate as I need to replace panels. No discolouration on the first fittings after ~6years so I'm pretty happy. Got my last lot off ebay!
