To be fair, games are usually postponed due to ice and snow these days because of the pansies in the crowd, not on the pitch. There's been so many people sue that there has to be perfect conditions for us to go anywhere. And incidentally, after watching that, why did we decide to give Noel Blake the freedom of Oakwell!
Remember clearing pitch, awesome times, i remember the gates used to be abart 5,000 maybe 6,000 on a good day,
I remember going down to clear the pitch in the 70's. Iley era. Was only a teenager then. No chance these days I'm afraid.
I was on mornings at Stocksbridge that day. After work I went to the Grey Horse for a couple of pints before intending to go home for a kip; but then, to my utter amazement, someone told me that the match was definitely on. So I ended up at Oakwell. Bloody freezing.
It reminds me of wanting the orange ball for my Subbuteo set, in the mid 80s. And I got it on one of my birthdays lol, along with the giant corner kickers and a set of fancy replacement goalposts and nets.
I remember this game as a kid. If I remember right, Channel 5 had just launched and had the rights to the Cup Winners Cup. First time I'd ever seen an orange ball used.
Saw a game played at Oakwell in similar conditions in the late 70s (?). Stockport County might gave been the opponents. White pitch, swept lines, orange ball. I also seem to think that there were some Wednesday fans in the away end, cheering for Stockport. They'd set off for their away game and then found out it had been called off, so they came to Oakwell instead. I might have got this wrong. But hopefully @JLWBigLil might have the details, in his TARDIS-like brain.
If it's the one I'm thinking of, Mike Summerbee of Stockport was pelted with snowballs by some young Barnsley fans.
Why have none of the out field players got gloves on? Or their socks pulled up over their knees like stockings? Players these days do so in the summer.
I seem to remember around that time we played Colchester? (or it could have been Stockport, not sure.) At the 80 minute mark we were 4-1 up. I'm sure it was a freezing cold day with snow on the pitch. Then the next 10 minutes ensued......
