I know there's been a few threads and after such positivity I'm not wanting to put a downer on things but everytime Morris scored it angers me. He's pretty much the best 9 in the championship. The people responsible for his sale should be looking at themselves as if they'd got what he was worth we wouldn't be in debt at all. Yer he had injury problems but you could see last season he was a quality player. I wonder if we have any sell on clause or anything to mean we can still receive anything else for his low cost sale to Luton. I hope the club improves this in the future because we are good at improving players but don't seem to get the rewards we deserve.
I agree. We sold him to a club whose record transfer fee paid was about £14. He will have had suitors willing to pay £5m+. But we dropped our knickers to Luton presumably because they were the first to put a bid in. People from the club can say "oh but they offered our asking price and no-one else wanted him" and I would respond "boll0x". There's no skirting round it or making excuses. We dropped a bollick selling him so cheaply. But I won't let that detract from the excellent job the club have done since then with manager and players.
Always been the same at the club for years never got what players were worth. Look at pinnock and kieffer Moore previously. And I agree with you about morris another we sold too cheap.
They're a championship club who finished in the play-offs and look to finish there again, in fact they've just beat Sheffield United away and close the gap to autos. I find it a little disrespectful how we just seemingly write off Luton. He didn't want to play here, feigned injury, will be on more money and he had a year left on his contract. We have absolutely no idea if any other clubs were involved or not. We don't even know the fee we got for Morris. When we signed him a lot of our fans didn't like it due to his record & injuries, and he only scored 14 league goals for us. Perhaps we have clauses, I don't know (or can't remember). But all that combined, especially the fact he jumped at the chance of leaving (albeit I don't blame him after last season) means we just have to accept and move on. The board put in over 4.5 million so sales had to happen. I thank him for what he did, but clearly didn't want to be here, so good luck and hope he gets Luton to the promised land
I very much doubt he did. 1 year left on his contract, didn't want to be here, history of injuries. I would have loved him to stay. I think his goals would have seen us up at the very top with Wednesday. But the club needed cash and the player wanted out. Did we get his market value? Not in my opinion. But that value wasn't £5m either.
Glad he scored today. I knew he would. As I said the other week when Bradshaw got his hat trick, former Reds never forget. It's quite frequent our former players scoring against one of the main Yorkshire sides.
You don't think a strong, mobile CF proving himself to be a regular championship goalscorer in 2022 would have had teams willing to pay more than what we got for him, which I understand was under £2m? Interesting. The fact is, we accepted a bid from Luton, whose record signing was £1.2m. I think we could very easily have got more.
Keane Lewis-Potter, with a worse goal scoring record - albeit 5 years younger - left Hull for Brentford for £15m. You don't think Morris was worth even a third of that? I'm sure Lewis-Potter was champing at the bit to leave Hull as well.
I know what you're getting at, but in 2 years he got 14 league goals. It doesnt exactly scream brilliance, fortunately for us we actually witnessed him so we know how good he was
One of my favourite players of recent times. If we could have held on to him we would be top of the table, but that's football. Good luck to him.
If his legs weren't made out of twiglets and cobwebs then there probably would have been teams willing to pay more for him. If he'd gone and played fewer than 10 games for Luton this season due to injury people would be saying it was a good deal.
The reported fee we got for him was 2m, which would be about 4 times what we paid for him, after he scored 14 goals for us in 51 games (according to Wikipedia), so less than 1 in 3. The idea that there would’ve been queues of clubs willing to pay 5m for him seems fanciful, given his injury record, scoring record and age
Literally this. Take note Jamo. Another reason we didn’t sign McGoldrick, who I’m sure you would have been all over.
What is often forgotten is we can only get what someone is willing to pay and also somewhere the player will go. Other clubs (Peterborough etc) have lied about the fees received for players which could cloud judgements. Morris, whilst an excellent player is a habitual sick note which will have impacted his value. Also he had clearly decided he wanted to go. Which is fine. And we took the best offer. Which again, is fine. Some posters on here seem to think we can get top price for everyone, when realistically we will get the best offer at the time.
Perhaps he had a clause in his contract? That could be anything like being linked to relegation or a monetary value matched who knows? So many unknowns and guesses when it comes to transfers.
