As I’ve not been to many games this season how many times have they announced over the tannoy that racist language had been heard and reported?
It's happened in quite a few home games. Pretty sure it's for the IRA/Leeds chant. I think it's part of the protocol we agreed to, as part of the sanctions
I think it’s the bit specifically targeted at the Pope because that’s discrimination based on religion.
It's the anti IRA part, as its also been announced after the Luca Connell chant which is also anti IRA. Why people feel the need to sing about them at baffles me to be honest. Although prior to the announcement today, I hadn't heard either song chanted.
In the Luca Connell one especially, because "he never gives the ball away" fits better than the anti IRA stuff anyway.
The club needs to come down on all those who booed and then deliberately sang the pope song straight after the announcement today. We have been threatened with ground closure because of it and their reaction is **** you i'll sing it anyway. Well **** off and sing it at home then so that the rest of us can watch football at oakwell.
It’s a very regular and very crap chant, but a bit odd they’ve decided to protect a bunch of terrorists and not the head of a major religion. Probably because of our charge for the McClean stuff a few years ago.
It's the same song as we used to sing to Jason McCarthy. But instead of 'he never gives the ball away', they sing 'he hates the ******* IRA'.
I presume the announcement is for both. I always thought the Leeds chant was **** the pigs rather than **** the Pope. I guess the IRA ones are a stereotype based on a person's heritage, similar to the Bambo Diaby chant.
It personally doesn't distract me from watching the game, but IMO there's absolutely no reason why we should be still singing it. It's getting us into bother, and doesn't actually mean anything in Barnsley. It has no resonance whatsoever. I could understand Rangers or Hearts singing it. I could also at least understand an offensive anti-Thatcher song. But for a set of kids at a Barnsley match...means absolutely nothing.
To the tune of September by Earth Wind & Fire Oooohheeeooo, Jason McCarthy Oooohheeeooo, he hates the ******* Wednesday Oooohheeeooo, he never gives the ball awaaaaayyyyy.
It’s a song that’s been sung for years, I’m not condoning it but it’s a song……as for getting it to trouble, really? A don’t see Man Utd Liverpool or Leeds sting behind doors when they’re chanting about the Munich air disaster or Istanbul or Hillsborough……..
Tbf I'm not remotely ar$ed about what Man Utd or Liverpool or Leeds are singing. Also don't personally care how long it's been sung for. There's loadsa things in life that used to be acceptable, that aren't acceptable any more. People have been warned multiple times now. If people start getting banned, they won't have a leg to stand on.
