Ok you Tykes pop pickers lol, here we go all the way back to the mid 80s onwards, and the number 1 songs. So let's go, with 1985.
I turned 14 that year, so you can imagine what I thought about Madonna, singing like that about virgins. Absolutely disgusting!!.
A View To A Kill and Love Will Tear Us Apart. Apologies, I was just being pedantic. Until recent films (I presume Adele will have done it) A view To A Kill was the only Bond theme to reach number 1 in America, but I guessed you were talking about the UK, where it only reached number 2.
Yeah these I believe are number 1's in the US, and some of them I thought were hits from '84, rather than '85.
Apart from a few great periods in (musical) time (1963-1966 or 1978-1980), Number Ones tend to be songs with a broad appeal, i.e. *****. Occasionally some songs are just too good not to get to Number One though, so If we’re talking greatest Number One of the 80s, for me it is one of two songs - the aforementioned Two Tribes and this…
The Specials - Ghost Town The Jam - Going Underground Michael Jackson - Billy Jean The Prodigy - Firestarter
One of the highlights for me that year was Queen's concert at Wembley. I've heard from fans who went, that Freddy & co belted it out of the park!. And apparently it was more popular than the all Merseyside Fa cup final there that year.
Ghost Town easily wins this for me. Summed up the state of the nation better than any other song before or after. Truly iconic. Beyond music really.
