It was as bad a penalty as you'll see really. Awful. At least put your foot through it. That really should be a wake up call, to start taking penalty practice seriously in prep for play-offs. I know it doesn't guarantee you anything, but it prepares you more than not practising them at all.
Absolutely. Phillips actually isn't great at all at shooting inside the box, he's brilliant shooting outside. It's criminal Norwood didn't take it, he's by far the most natural actual striker of the ball. But we should be training for penalties. If technique is crap just hit it as hard as you can - it'd have a better chance of going in than Phillips one tonight!
I was just in shock that we actually got a pen in the first place, bordering on a miracle. Shocking effort by Phillips though. Should’ve been Norwood for me.
The odd thing is we've NOT been given so many penalties this season for far more clear cut chances than that.
Norwood picked up the ball and wanted to take it. He and Phillips obviously argued the toss and then the camera went off them. I just knew then as he stepped back only a couple of paces that he was going to miss but got lucky with the rebound
That will have played a part in the miss. It should be clear as day who the penalty taker is before we get one.
A similar thing happened at Doncaster when Tedic selfishly denied either Jalo or Martin the chance of a hat trick. Both wanted the ball but Tedic was keen on getting his first goal for the Reds, and he failed. Surely these things are discussed in training but there was obviously discord there today. Phillips got away with his weak penalty. It’s amazing that someone who hits the ball so hard from outside the box should choose not to do the same from 12 yards
Kept his composure? His feeble effort came back straight to his feet and my spouse could have tucked that one away.
Got to admit I'm to blame. Watched the penalty only because we were 3-0 up, having not watched one since god was a lad. Cos of the jinx I have on em. Back to giving em a miss.
Blimey, Phillips is getting some stick for that penalty. It was poor but how many players have never taken a poor spot kick? Not many. Having said that I'd have Norwood as our penalty taker without question. As someone else has said he's a good striker of the ball plus he's a big personality and, presumably, less likely to let nerves get the better of him.
He’s missed a couple though not for us admittedly but I don’t think he was pen taker at Ipswich etc. Also re Phillips it’s not like he’s had an opportunity to get to grips with taking a pen until the 41st league game of the season and no matter how much you practice them in training you can’t replicate a matchday.
I don’t think it’s that he missed so much, it was the manner of it for me. They clearly didn’t have an agreed taker, he took it off two paces, and was an awful strike. Didn’t have any conviction at all. All the hallmarks of a team thinking ‘oh, we’ve actually got a pen, what now’. Personally think the keeper made a hash of it. Was very lucky to get the rebound IMO. I’d definitely be adding extra time onto training from here, to practice pens
