So he was allowed to play and score a few goals. Surly there is a case from clubs who suffered. Expect objections and appeals to go in.

OK fair enough, punish him. He knows the rules. Rules are there for a reason. But... the guy also needs help & support. Without assuming and jumping to conclusions he may have a gambling problem, which Is a nasty, horrible disease..

Not entirely sure on this but I don't think it was any game he was involved in.

It’s a bit of a jump to speculate he has a gambling addiction. He has pleaded guilty to 232 breaches of the FA rule - over four years. That’s just over one bet per week - or two ish per week during the football season.

I’m not a gambling addict. But most weekends during the season I put three or four football bets on, an acca on both teams to score, an acca on over 2.5 goals, and a bet or two on Barnsley, usually result and an anytime goalscorer double. I spend a fiver a week, sometimes a bit more. I enjoy it, I can afford to lose the money given it’s not a lot, and I do get the odd win.

Toney, even if he was a gambling addict, still had to be banned. There’s no rule on gambling overall as a footballer. He could have bet on as many horses, rugby matches, the darts, snooker, virtuals and slots games as he liked. Roulette, bingo, whatever. I suspect it’s a case of him doing it thinking he’d get away with it more than doing it because he couldn’t stop.

There’s a reason the period ended 2 years ago, when he’s been more in the spotlight.

I do sympathise, but ‘rules is rules’ as they say.

Still don’t agree on the betting company sponsorship ban either to be honest, but we’ve done that argument. Most disagree with me. I just think it’s nannying people.

Barton less offences? He put 1200+ bets on, Toney is just over 200.

Maybe, and I'm just thinking out loud here, if you don't know if someone is a gambling addict or not, you shouldn't make a judgement? Maybe you think that's OK. I don't know. But considering the ramifications of this, maybe you could consider that's not a productive thing to do?

The gambling ads are so prevalent over here during the hockey playoffs I seriously considered not letting the kids watch. Heck some of it is integrated into the coverage commentary.

    FA said in a statement:
“These rules apply to everyone involved in football, from the players and managers to match officials & club staff”

Wonder how they manage to police people working in the club shop or canteen from placing bets?

But it is productive to speculate someone who placed c240 bets over a four year period has a problem and needs help?

And I never judged whether he was or not. What I said was that regardless of whether he has an addiction his punishment was necessary and is justified.

It was you - and wakeyred - that suggested he had become ‘addicted’. It was you who made a judgement. Based on paper thin evidence, if any.

Exactly the reason why a lot of us said there's no point punishing him if he doesn't get help and consistent support. And I hope he gets it. Good luck to the lad, addiction is a cruel temptress.

He bet on his team to win when he was playing and to lose when he wasn’t.

He sounds bitter, not an addict.
