And seeing the Adam Phillips challenge this morning, it was probably the right decision not to overturn the red card. It was a clumsy challenge, the ball was there to be won but he went in full pelt & gave the referee an excuse. Let’s be honest, it wasn’t a clear & obvious error was it. In real time I even remember saying oh ****, & was preying the referee would show a yellow. The penalty shout, well that one they got majorly wrong. It was a penalty, it was a clear & obvious error by the referee not to give it, it should have been overturned. This happened just before the sending off, so the game would have had a different outcome I’m sure. Another thing that irked me was the stoppage in play a couple of minutes before extra time of the 2nd half of extra time kicked in, the referee pissing about with the linesman, it added at least an extra minute on top of all the cramp stoppages. Absolutely gutted, given the manner of the result, given we outplayed & outfought Wednesday, they certainly had Lady Luck shining down on them in every aspect. Now i just want to switch off until August, but that’s going to be impossible isn’t it. It’s going to be a very very busy summer. Duff’s future, players attracting offers from other clubs no doubt. We need to strike while the iron is still hot, offer duff a new contract with a hefty pay rise, that will then hopefully convince our better players to stay, & would make a real statement of intent, hopefully Isted & Bobby Thomas would then want to sign permanently. We must capitalise on the good work from all at the club this past 12 months!
I'm very much in favour of VAR, when used correctly it can be a very useful tool to help the referee. But the problem is, it isn't used correctly. A lot of people say that it takes power away from the referee, but if anything, but for me that's only true when it's used like it was yesterday. Why wasn't the referee asked to review both decisions again? If he stood by them the second time, then fair enough. But an independent person has looked at it, with the benefit of replays, and said that the refs call wasn't wrong enough to warrant him having a second look. That's the issue for me. I agree that the red card decision might be correct, and the penalty might not, but why he wasn't afforded the opportunity to look again, when he could easily have done so, is the reason why VAR still isn't working. It's not the technology, it's the people using it.
Every week in the Premier League the penalty decision is reversed. Don`t think the sending off would be.
This. VAR should operate so as to allow the ref to review decisions he might have got wrong and take a better considered view. The way it works at present is that if the ref get asked to look again he invariably changes his decision. You could put Sesame Street on that monitor and the outcome would be the same. It's the bloke in the box making the decision and the ref then pretending that it's his.
I don't think it is, the time would have been played whether it be before stoppage time or during it.
I see people saying the Phillips tackle was reckless & dangerous & I get that argument if both his legs are in front of him, in that scenario I can see how he can be sent off for ‘intent’ or ‘endangering an opponent’ even if he doesn’t fully connect but I just can’t see how that can be the argument when his left foot is under him. There’s no danger of the Wednesday player been two footed.
He went in full pelt to smash the ball but missed because Gregory got there first & made a meal of it holding his head. No intent to injure of course, but it was a rash decision made in the heat of the moment & it looked bad in real time so wasn’t surprised it was given as red, even though the referee took great delight in brandishing it as you could tell from his body language. It was never going to get overturned unfortunately because both sides could make cases, & that would apply if he only gave a yellow.
Can't disagree with the red tbh, from the refs viewpoint it looked nasty.... with hindsight I'm sure Phillips wouldn't have gone near him... the penalty incident was a disgrace.
Just no need to do it though. Im afraid that incident cost us the game, we would have gone on a won in my opinion without it. Not blaming Phillips as who knows what led to him doing that or the final outcome and its so easy for me to say that but just jockey the player or even robustly challenge him whilst stood but the outcome cost us the game.
If that red card is given in a regular league game, the ban is overturned every time. It’s never a red. He goes in with one foot, side foot first. Then the Wednesday players reacted like he’d been shot
It's one of those that if he gives a yellow, I don't think VAR would've upgraded it to a red, but can equally understand why it didn't overturn the red he gave. It was late, high, and I actually think the reason Phillips didn't cause any damage was because his challenge was so badly timed - he gets his timing right, he thuds into Gregory on the follow through and probably breaks a bone. It's just immensely frustrating and sums up our disgusting treatment by officials this season that yet another penalty wasn't given to us immediately prior, which VAR should've overturned and which would've meant the passage of play leading to the red card didn't happen. I actually thought the officials had good games other than that, didn't really fall for any play acting (apart from Gregory's for the red) and tried to let the game flow. But, they got at least one crucial call wrong - and, as usual, we were the ones to suffer for it.
