A few years back I came home for a particular milestone birthday. I wanted to celebrate at The Three Acres Inn, but it was not available on that particular day. As such, we went to the Stafford Arms on the actual day, and then dined and spent the night later at the Three Acres.

I will be coming home in October for my brother's milestone birthday (exact dates to be tweaked, once the fixtures list is released).

Based on the two above establishments, are there any venues this wonderful BBS would like to suggest as alternatives?

    Thanks in advance.

If you fancy a trip out, you could try the York Minster Refectory. Andrew Pern from the Michelin-starred Star Inn at Herome has recently opened in the old and historic Minster School buildings. It's quite the venue and I've heard it's very good. He also has The Star Inn the City which is in a lovely location by Lendal Bridge and in Museum Gardens on the river and I have eaten there and it was lovely.

As an aside, I've heard a few people say the Three Acres isn't what it used to be.

I reckon I'll try the Refectory before too long. My daughter is going to be a York Minster Chorister next academic year so guess we'll spend a fair bit of time waiting around the minster waiting to pick her up :)

If you are staying overnight try The Wensleydale Heifer (but not the James Bond Room)

There's a lovely boozer in Hambleton. We went there while Laura was pregnant with George.

The 315 at Lepton area is a hotel and health Spa together with Restaurant should you want an overnight stay.
Try for one of the more recent room extensions at the rear lower level.
However, the Three Acres takes some beating

Another vote for the Star Inn at Harome. My favourite restaurant.

If you fancy getting a bit avant garde then Man Behind the Curtain in Leeds is fantastic, but ruinously expensive.

Went just before it had an arson attack when someone had set fire to the thatched roof.

Best Sunday lunch I have ever had anywhere.

I would highly recommend joro in sheffield

it is fine dining with tasting menu, if you’re into that kind of thing. The only one I have been to of this type, that’s better, is lenclume but that has 3 Michelin stars and joro isn’t a million miles off it. It’s really relaxed and not stuffy at all.

also roots in York is really good.

I recently went to the Dunkirk near Penistone which was really good - which is pub / restaurant. I think the chef used to be at 3 acres

There may be a different Dunkirk I don't know about, but was the one you went to considerably closer to Denby Dale than Penistone?

I've been many times but not for years. I used to drink in it and deliver their coal. It's changed hands a lot so I wouldn't be able to recommend it now, but it's a lovely building.

We've eaten at Star Inn the City loads of times - absolutely fabulous place. Love it there.
