I can’t imagine for a second we would sell any of our key players to Wednesday. I just don’t think they would risk undoing all the progress they’ve made reconnecting with fans.
Bit of a rant.... If Mads went to Wednesday for the (pig)fat pay check he would go from hero to zero in a nano second. Nothing against BFC other than it demonstrates that even with ambition the rules re parachute payments, FFP, scrutiny of owners or rather 'lack of', etc. etc. screw smaller clubs like Barnsley who try to play by the rules. Might be a bit of an overreaction especially as Wednesday are, in the short term at least, NOT rivals given they are a League higher, but I would probably be inclined to detach myself further from football since there is little point being loyal when the overwhelming majority of managers and players are in it for the money. I have already lost interest in 99% of Premier League and International football for various reasons. It wasn't always like that, i.e. 'journeyman' footballers chasing the money have pretty much always existed but they were the exception rather than the rule. Nowadays it is rare to find managers/coaches and players who are prepared to align themselves with a club and fanbase. It is worse now IMO, because even average players can earn far more than than 'Joe Bloggs' even in the short career and, if they didn't try playing the 'Billy ******' roll by buying luxury cars, big houses trying to live live the lifestyle of a superstar they could set themselves up for life. Only a few decades ago, unless you were the likes of George Best, Denis Law etc. you left your playing career having had a pretty modest wage and many used to end up buying pubs or some form of employment away from football and yet, many stayed loyal to the clubs they signed for, often playing for only one, two or three clubs for their entire playing career. Obviously times change, the Footballing authorities at all levels sold out to SKY and have, IMO, irreparably damaged sport. and not just football. There is no doubt that subscription TV and streaming has bought a better quality of programming than that provided by the poorly resourced FTA broadcasters but , again IMO, the price has been too high. If there was less football on TV would football decline through less exposure or would gates improve as more people physically attend matches due to a lack of alternatives? Like I have said, times have changed and the internet generations expect everything for free nowadays so I honestly do not know the answer to that one. If footballer were paid far less, STs and POTD prices could fall dramatically bringing the costs for fans down to more reasonable levels. It might also boost the number of youngsters who are motivated by the love of the game to try it as a career rather than the money they can earn.
Yep... **** head cold all week. Can't taste anything since last Friday and missus has now caught it, Rain and thunderstorms every day for the past few weeks so needed to vent... Sorry.
First and foremost, I'd say Mads is focused on his development as a player. Under Duff, he can continue with that but if Duff leaves, then I reckon he will go & maybe it will be to the same club. I think Wednesday would be a poor choice, as he should follow in Pinnock's footsteps and join a club that will be challenging for the Premier League in the next 2 seasons. So, if he leaves in this window, Leeds or Leicester would be much better for him in my view. Assuming we keep Duff, signing a 2 year extension would be a decent option for Mads, bearing in mind Pinnock left us when he was 26yo & after we'd secured automatic promotion from Div 1.
Can never begrudge a player moving on for better money. At best, it's a short career. At worst, it could end in the next game or training session. Moving to 'rivals' never goes down very well, but I think we can safely say there'll be better clubs than Wendy taking a look at Mads.
Not always been like that. We used to trade both ways quite often with Wednesday without much fuss. E.g. David Hirst, Larry May, Tony Cunningham, Peter Springett, Brian Joicey, Graham Pugh, Mick Pickering and loads more. We even had Siggi Jonsson on loan. Maybe the relationship was soured when Danny Wilson moved there.
I’m still angry about the Hirst sale all these years later. Allegedly the club did not benefit as much from the transaction as a certain individual did. Allegedly.
I think that argument was more about the ridiculous fee we got for him rather than the moving to local rivals discussion. I was disgusted that we'd had our pants pulled down and had no extras on the contract. Didn't matter that it was Wednesday, could have been WBA. There were definitely some shenanigans going off there.
