Under contract, international, 23 years old, 125 championship appearances - Normal sale at least £3m, Barnsley sale £1.2m and a statement 6 months later about having to find millions to break even. Learn how to sell players for their right value then...

Under a contract that has a fee set in it.

Also, his value last summer was seemingly £0, because nobody wanted to buy him!

You can only sell someone for 3 million if someone wants to pay it. Clearly nobody wanted to part with anything remotely like that.

I think we'll do well regardless. It was a smart move last season to put him on a new contract. Ball was in Barnsley's court then. If not, he could have run his contract down or at best a small fee in the January window. I think they are learning if you like. And as someone else said. Only worth what someone else is prepared to pay.

Read again Archey. It's not known to my knowledge. just his guesswork. And a touch of sarcasm.

Not so sure about those two, depends on what centre halves they have already I suppose. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see him in for Mowatt again though.

If the choice is to sell players for more or put your own cash in, I doubt any owner is deliberately under selling players.

Part of the ability of the club to attract talent is the fact that we are a stepping stone. This works both ways in terms of attracting players and then their release. The only way to break this cycle is to offer longer contracts with higher release clauses.

That strategy does not come without significant risk if recruitment is poor with higher salaries and higher payoffs for the flops.

Thats just not true, Millwall would have bought him but didnt meet our asking price - Fairly sure if we had just taken the first offer like some suggest we always do we would have got a million or so for him. I assume his new contract has a built in release clause - it could be £3 Million so if anyone wants to pay that and can agree terms he will be gone, but if we are desperate to sell we can certainly cash in and get over £1million for him

its all a gamble isnt it - the 2 Belgians Conway signed must have cost the club a lot of money, but then the likes of Connel who is on a long contract definitely benefits the club - as long as he doesnt get a career threatening injury -or turn out to be made of biscuit like Benson

Fair enough. I didn’t realise that Millwall had made a bid. But the point still stands. My post was in response to a post suggesting that we were selling on the cheap, and that we could get more money for players. Despite the fact that nobody wants to offer those higher fees.

Thats a fair point - I guess the problem we faced especially last summer is we were perceived as needing to sell and had a reputation, whether deserved or not, though probably valid, of caving and selling cheap rather than not at all. It will take a while to change that

Interesting thread especially with some of the fees being banded about in the comments considering that some on this forum do not want him back playing for us this season ,which I find ludicrous , he is a talented footballer who is now developing into an International player , Millwall had him last season & now Watford are linked with him , both teams who should be pushing for the play offs in the championship next season, yet we have fans who think he is not good enough for division 1 . I wish him all the luck in the world & hope he goes on to have a great career , he was messed about here by inept coaches who somehow managed to play him here there and everywhere with the result that he struggled along with other talented players in the squad , last season he suffered a quite serious injury set back but it would appear that he has managed to overcome his problems , what really winds me up is that some fans who have slated him will be the same fans who moan about the size of the fee .

I don't think his contract has a fee set in it. Doesn't look like Millwall are buying him.
