I feel like this is one of those things I should care about but just don't. These people were nosing about in a massive human tragedy where they may now succumb to the same fate.
Is this Darwood chap whos reportedly on the sub any relation to india's most prolific gangster Darwood Ibrahim who the FBI and other American / Pakistan government agencies are searching for plus the Hamish Harding guy made his money from buying and supplying aircraft ....mmm 1 +1 =3 maybe ....but is he responsible of selling aircraft to the Russians...or dodgy dealings with the yanks...either way it's got legs in my opinion
From what I've read on possible things that have gone wrong it sounds very ominous. Thoughts with those on board and their loved ones.
Don’t understand why it’s not tracked in some way that they always know where it is anyway at $250000 a person I’d have thought they could invest in some technology
With something that small going that deep the only way to reliably track it would probably be a very long bit of rope.
Did you see the footage a US journalist shot when he met the owner. The thing weighs about ten tonnes but the build quality is only slightly better than if it had been made in someone's shed. It's driven using an Xbox controller. https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/en...viewing-submarine_uk_649163c2e4b04ee51a9d7cff
What gets me is why on earth would you use a wireless controller rather than wired? What advantage does that confer in return for adding an extra element that might go wrong? As soon as I saw that I'd have been out - not because I expect it to go wrong, but because it's a worrying indication of the designer's thought process (or lack of)
The thing that is 'screaming out' at me is the various reports stating they are searching 7000 -10000 square miles of ocean. Now I am no expert but the specs of the sub state that it manages a maximum 3 miles per hour. It lost contact in under 2 hours from launch (1 hr:45mins?) . Now even if it set off in the wrong direction that would be an radius from the launch point of under 5 miles so approx 80 sq miles! it could cover in that time (add a little extra for any currents. Since they know the direction at launch it was heading in unless it got totally messed up with navigation and was 180 degrees off course (unlikely), that would reduce the search area by at least a third. I am sure, given the main direction of travel for a submersible is up and down that the batteries are not designed to give it long range lateral movement and 50 miles at 3 mph is about 17 hours of the motors running at full power . So why the need to cover a 50 mile radius in every direction? Something sounds not right although I am not an expert in search and rescue so must have misunderstood the reports of the ongoing search.
Now I know how you lot must feel about any given subject that entered your internet radius, that day..
What about those emergency beacons that can be released that come to the surface and ping a location signal they have on subs? Why was it not incorporated in the design? is it not possible to fit one to submersibles or could they not survive the pressure/ascent from 2 miles depth?
There was guy on news yesterday who went on it not that long ago and he described it as you were literally lowered on a cable and then released, so that suggests even less distance to cover(aside if underwater tides etc) but also he said when raising there were weights attached to the sub that were released and it literally floated back up.
I thought you were basing your assessment of area on how far it would have covered in 2 hours. I think you're massively underestimating the influence of currents.
Reading reports yesterday that they had cut a *lot* of corners to get it working. Those corners that they cut came from a century of designing and building submarines that didn't get lost and from the mistakes made in those that were. It looks like these decisions were costly.
Are you sure it wasn't *cubic* miles that was meant. The ocean is 3-dimensional and a 20 mile circle with 2.4 miles down is 3000 cubic miles. Extend that to 30 miles and its just under 7000mile3.
