So if it does unravel in that way what would you expect the board to do?

The Woodrow one is a valid example, though the rumours there were only about interest from Cardiff in the player, which was likely shelved when they signed Harry Wilson.

The Huddersfield one, less so. The rumour was that he was on their back up list, if they couldn't convince Warnock to stay. It seems Duff wasn't interested in going to Huddersfield, and they got their number one target.

The various player rumours mainly come from anonymous, wind up merchant social media accounts. In this instance, we are hearing that an appointment is imminent from local press in Swansea, the Athletic, The Independent, Sky Sports and various others.

Personally I would pass over it. We are willing to give him a 3yr deal. Again incentivise the deal with a larger buy out that the individual could also access part of if activated and give him a yearly bonus loyalty payment to keep him happy during the deal. 500k was always going to be chicken feed for a championship club.

The ones who say how many pages it's stretched to make me laugh, '37 pages on a twitter rumour', whilst adding to said pages with their post. The irony is lost :D

'Michael, welcome back from your beach holiday.. how about a little staycation, it's 46 miles nearer to Swansea than Barnsley by the way (wink, wink), just look on google maps.. it's lovely weather down the Gower this time of year, and we can give you a stadium tour as a courtesy.. no strings and no commitment, our manager is still here and it's not like Twitter will explode or anything.. think about it..'

But what on earth would be the point in grimly holding on to a manager who doesn't want to be here? To a certain extent I can understand why it might sometimes be worth it with players, but surely you always need the head coach to be fully invested in the project, especially in a setup like ours.

The buyout clause is a nice little bonus for Barnsley when the manager decides to leave; it would be counter-productive to have one set so high that he can't go when he gets what he thinks is a better offer.

He's not gone though has he. These 'He's gone' posts aren't helpful. He's not gone until he's gone, and unless you know for a fact he's gone, you can't say he's gone - technically he's still here until newsbot says otherwise.

Any bonus we could offer for successes would also be chicken feed in fact probably even more so than the 500k

Not sure if I've misunderstood so apologies if so.

The release fee is normally agreed with an agent and those he represents to put in a contract to the club they are joining. Happens all the time. If a player or manager thinks they may achieve better elsewhere in the future rather than sit out a long deal.
Best of both worlds. Move on if successful.
Pay off if unsuccessful and sacked.

as I see it. It could be the make or break to get a deal over the line. It certainly has to be in line with the clubs thoughts as well. But it will be more a case of take it or leave it. Or they'll go elsewhere. I think that happened with Hammill first time round. Certainly did with Vaz tè.

I've been feeling that no news from Duff or the club is good news - ie he's staying but I've got to say I've lost hope over the last 24 hours or so. I think the JAQ tweet kind of put the final nail in the coffin for me.

I'm resigned to news he's left on either Monday or Tuesday followed relatively swiftly by Swansea's bid for Connell.

It’s a great question. There probably isn’t too much they can do. That’s what makes the situation untenable for me. And that’s also partly why I think it’s going to happen. I suspect the delay is just down to hammering through details. Compo, personal terms, back room staff, Russell Martin’s move etc.

Don't see anyway back for Duff and time BFC developed some backbone and not recruit managers who insist on a quick route out. Barnsley has become a doormat for people to walk over.

But realistically, what can they do? There isn't a contract in world football that prevents a manager from being able to leave a club. We're a Division 3 football club. Every manager who joins us will have ambitions to manage at the top level. Every one. And if that isn't with us, it's gonna be with someone else. I totally get how frustrated people feel. Even Cheltenham managed two seasons.

I was replying to a position that the original poster put forward. I have no idea whatsoever as to whether or not Duff is on Swansea's radar, if Swansea approached Barnsley to speak with him and if they have or haven't spoken with him. Personally I hope he told Swansea to go do one as he has a job to finish at Oakwell. He was like a breath of fresh air last season.

As long as we operate the way we do, you will never get a manager/coach who will come for the long term project.
That’s where our model falls down because with the right manager and 3-4 years we could build a squad to do something special but as long as a manager sees it as he is having to start all over again each season it makes it hard to keep that drive and ambition here.

Like perhaps everyone on this board I know nothing, but reckon the delay is solely down to Russell Martin's move to Soton now. I doubt Duff will still be negotiating with Swansea, I reckon it would have fallen through by now if so. As soon as Martin is announced, I wouldn't be surprised to see Duff announced shortly after. But who knows, stranger things have happened, not over till the fat lady singeth etc.

Can anyone point out another club - apart from Watford - who has been through as many managers as Barnsley over recent years? Serious question.
