Get the right balance between youth and experience, average age should be around 27. Needn’t cost a fortune.
Not a world Wellens comes. Wouldn’t be averse to it at all but he would be mental to leave a club thats absolutely flying and with such momentum for a club in the same division. Would be more than happy to be proved wrong of course! Would be a statement I think.
What failed model? You say we should be aiming for an average age of around 27, which would probably make us one of the oldest sides (if not the oldest) in the country. A lot of the sides who are toeing the financial line seem to do something similar. Wednesday, Derby, Reading, all generally have older sides. Whilst some won't agree with it, we do need some players with resale value if we're ever going to progress. Look at Wednesday for example, when was the last time any of their outgoing transfers commanded a big fee?
Said Wellens yesterday https://barnsleyfc.org.uk/threads/now-its-official.322877/page-2 Only a bad spell at Donny.
Wilder for me as #1 choice. 2 'poor' in relative terms performances with Boro & Watford, lives local, needs another positive on the CV, great track record, and I don't think we constrain the manager as much as we did in past recruitment wise. He'd be top of my list without a shadow of a doubt.
Average age of successful football teams is 27. Anything below 25 makes it very difficult. We were second youngest in the division this year at just over 23. Lincoln’s squad was very slightly younger. Resale value of division 1 players is not very high regardless of how young they are. Hence we need to do everything possible to get into the championship by tweaking the model. Luton with an average age of 26 did OK despite not having a lot of money and a low average attendance. It is OK to have a basically young squad but a few experienced old heads are immensely valuable. Ipswich was above 26 and Wednesday were too far in the other direction at around 29.
Anybody suggesting Wellens cannot have watched the documentary about Salford City. He came across as a right arrogant arsehole, a bit of a bully. Made Keith Hill look nice by comparison
This 100% We have to at least offer him chance. His stock isn't the highest right now and we are super close to home for him and have been playing his preferred 352 all last season. On paper we are the perfect fit for him aside from possibly the fact we are L1. But he was due to go reading so clearly he doesn't mind being in L1.
Could be a case of right time right place, like you say we could be a perfect fit for him to get another promotion on his CV and then we can sell him.
They have to at very least speak to him and see what he says. If he says no then we tried. To not even consider someone with his skill set and experience when he's on our doorstep and available would be a monumental oversight imo.
