I was commenting on the post which Dreamboy mentioned Tom Jones. I was only saying they both alter their voice/range to compensate for years of wear and tear.. Not comparing like for like As you seem to think.

True. & it’s knowing your limitations. Crap analogy, but it’s like Wayne Rooney dropping to midfield, when his legs started to slow.
I thought Axl sang great last night even when stretching for the high ones. I thought- couldn’t the band tune down a step, like Sabbath & Ozzy’s band did.? Probably not an option for Slash..
I’m really enjoying Sharon’s set, having done a beer run.. :)

Watched a lot of bands/gigs this weekend. And enjoyed em all. I reckon the Elton one has edged it for me personally. Closely followed by, dare I say it.. Both of Rick Astleys. Someone I never thought I could take to. Got better with age and his newer material. Would definitely not have watched Morrissey. He does make me feel miserable.
Will try catch up on some more in the week.

Really enjoyed it this year. Arctic Monkeys were a bit flat but watchable. GnR were ok, not as good as the classic televised Paris gig but decent - just wish Axl had accepted he couldn't hit the high notes and opted to lower it to a range he could make. Elton has been better than I expected.

I've watched plenty of other highlights and enjoyed pretty much all of it.

The odd thing for me has been the lack of female representation in the headlining acts. Only GnR had a woman in the line up (keyboards).

Completely agree. A lot of Elton's songs are incredibly complex, sung across a range of octaves with a lot of very subtle key changes.

Rocket Man and I'm Still Standing are two of the most difficult songs I've ever attempted to sing in my own living room. It's no coincidence that Taron Egerton had to record the songs for the film in a lower key to the originals.

Elton's key changes and transitions tonight were astoundingly good, as was the power his voice still has. Again something that can diminish with age as your lung function deteriorates.

Tom Jones is a great singer in his own right, but I have absolutely no problem hitting the notes to any of his songs, and I've had about ten hours of vocal coaching in my entire life.

I actually think his voice got better the longer the show went on. Having warmed up during the first couple or so. Which is not unusual (forgive the pun) btw. For any singer.

Anyone slating the vocal condition of old singers, should do it themselves everyday for 30, 40, 50, 60 years & see how they get on? I’ve been saying this all weekend.
& anyone saying but Cat Stevens still sounds great, should really learn their music history. Yusuf didn’t sing or tour for best part of 30 years.. Because he (&with total respect) found a different calling.. & Cat’s stuff wasn’t hard to reach in the first place..
& that kid from High Green, he’s just trying to find his way out, beyond the successful young band, which has had its day. Nowt wrong with that. That band passed me by a bit (a lot of others did, too) but I’ll give them a good listen.
I don’t know about his American accent. Kusworth affected one too, when he was pissed onstage. Embarrassing. Fcking bands. Whatever..

I’m 2 hours behind, would have been nice in the moment but had stuff to do. Have spent half the gig shooting the screen on an iPhone to send to Mrs C in New York. who’s a big fan. Adding the odd verbal aside & checking the tape before sending. At this rate, Sharon should be offstage about 4 am..? It’s ok, I have beer..:)

Love the Arctic Monkeys' early stuff. Brilliant songs. Fantastic melodies, very clever lyrics, yet hugely successful while never having recorded anything that sounds overly commercial. I really rate them. But as a standalone vocalist, Alex Turner is absolutely nothing special. That's not any sort of criticism, as he more than makes up for it with his lyrical genius. Let's be honest, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen, three of the greatest songwriters to walk the earth, couldn't/can't sing for toffee.

Was really impressed with Elton John last night from what I saw, but anyone else think it is a bit cheeky that he/the media are now saying "could be his last ever performance in the UK" when I thought that's what this was billed as?

Just find it disingenuous when fans are told something is a 'goodbye tour' then they suddenly reappear a couple of years later.

That was a trend started by Sinatra in the 80s... doesn't do any harm to ticket sales

    TBF, he has history
Elton John was back on the road just two years after his first touring "retirement" and resumed touring in February 1979 with Ray Cooper. He wrapped up his second farewell tour, the "Yellow Brick Road Tour," in March 2022, after doing shows in 300 cities, across five continents.
But again he is far from being on his own with 'farewell tours & gigs
