I think Devaney would be a lazy appointment.

If this post is a sarcastic dig at the ability of Luca Connell then you ought to give up watching football.

He is absolutely fantastic and his contribution isn’t measured solely by goals and assists.

I can’t quite believe this board sometimes.

He's only going to get better too. It would be great if we got at least another season out of him. I can see him becoming a talisman with a little bit more confidence in front of goal.

It's been mentioned quite a few times that Johnny Steele, Norman Hunter, Danny Wilson, Andy Ritchie & Paul Heckingbottom were all appointed from within and went on to win promotion. However, what seems to be forgotten is that they were all at the time their appointment were announced (with the exception of Hunter) the cheap option and a clearly a sign of the lack of ambition being shown by the board. 'Typical Barnsley' if you like.

I think that if Devaney is appointed, the powers that be will have gone through a list of candidates, possibly interviewed some of them, and decided that Devaney is objectively the best man for the job.

Can't disagree with any of that but it was a free shot against teams that also had nothing to play for.
I'm sure every single fan would be fully behind Devaney but considering the raised expectations for next season I just think it's a gamble that we don't need to take.

Unless Paterson goes to Swansea you would he would be the natural replacement and not Devaney as he’s the first team coach and Paterson is the assistant head coach, although I guess with 4 staff leaving Swansea he’s likely to come back for Paterson now.

Likely, although he didn't take Wade Elliott with him from Cheltenham.

He wanted to but Elliott preferred to stay put and be promoted from within. Made a decent fist of it too given the resources he had to work with.

Got your goals and assists stats wrong.

Seemed to miss him every time he was taken off last season, as the scoreline only ever got worse once he was replaced.

Board of directors with their own money invested in the club emplying a CEO who is literally in place to appoint new managers can't be arsed to go through the process. Yeah right.

I'm sure Paterson would take the HC job over another assistant job though?

But isn't any appointment a gamble? Most experienced head coaches have at least one failure in their CV.

I wouldn’t mind Devaney staying as assistant coach just a little bit longer (a year I suppose given our track record) to learn a bit more from a different head coach and then take the job then. He might not want to do that again though maybe, who knows?

Will back whoever is in the dugout come August.

The two previous home games he took charge there was no improvement at all.
So he didn't get any kind of a lift, even in effort.
The squad there now will know how to play him. New face start again.

    Not really.

I see John a bit walking the dogs. His problem was he was the dressing room joker & then he got quite heavy handed trying to establish his authority as manager. Disco hasn't really got that to deal with. His playing days at Barnsley are years ago.

Whether he is the right man for the job has to be assessed by the board & with the right coaching team behind him. Jury is out on that, just like any new manager IMO.

My view is this is why things are taking so long. I agree with you BTW & would say Patterson / Davaney would be an ideal progression.

I don't get the cheap option or lazy appointment argument, I get why people are saying it and in the past maybe thats been the case, but why would this board, after spending millions of their personal wealth to first buy the club and then keep it afloat each season, spending 6m last season and probably millions again this season, why would they then risk all that investment on a cheap or lazy appointment. Surely its in their interest to protect their investment, while ever we are in league one they either have to pump millions in or sell the club for less than they paid for it, the sooner we get promoted the better for everyone. Cheap/lazy for me just doesn't make any sense, I can't see why that would appeal to them and after spending ages interviewing loads of people last time, why on earth go for a lazy 'he'll do' appointment this time

For me if Devaney gets it then its due to him being their preferred choice, not because its cheap or lazy, but because they feel he's the best
