Did a bit of digging: Derry was his first appointment as manager which was 2 seasons ago. Season before he took the job they finished 7th on 20pts. In his first season they finished 4th on 54pts and qualified for Europe and last season they finished 2nd on 66pts also qualified for Europe. Last seasons 2nd place finish was Derry’s highest finish in 17 seasons. Last season they won the FAI Cup for the first time in 10 years and only the 6th time in their history Its an impressive record, if he can turn a club around from finishing on 20pts to 54pts in 12 months that’s quite an impact and then followed that with their highest finish in 17 seasons and first silverware in 10. Not too shabby a start to your managerial career. Just hope it’s not a one off, he played over 200 games for Derry and would have known them inside out and had fan support, here he’d know no one, no experience of the league and half the fans already think he’s naff Either way if it is him that gets the job he’s got my full backing
….He also won the NI equivalent of the charity shield this year, a one off match between FAI Cup winner and League winner
I don't get all this disappointment, we were all underwhelmed when Danny Willson got the job in 1995 (or whenever it was). If it happens, we have to give the guy a chance, who knows what it might lead to?
So let me get this straight. Club will announce who gets job once it’s all got the green light and can be announced. Local report from Derry that bloke being interviewed. Loads of fans here assume he’s got job and go into meltdown and lose it - none of whom know who’s getting the job. Club will have interviewed a number of candidates. Club have kept silent as you’d expect and hope, if you were being interviewed. Said fans throw hissy fit because they assume one of supposed interviewees is useless, and haven’t been told who’s getting job yet. Marvellous.
Not necessarily this summer so far, but I've certainly noticed an increase in transfers from the league of Ireland to the champ/league 1 in the last few years. We've two players ourselves, half of Lincoln's side have played in that league, and off the top of my head, there's Georgie Kelly at Rotherham and Antony Scully at Wigan who came from that league in recent seasons. That's without me deep diving into every team in the Champ/league 1.
The tone of Doug's tweet suggests to me he's our next man. We'll see. Whoever we get, I'll adopt exactly the same approach as I did last time. I'll judge him from what I see on the pitch, and I'll make my first proper assessment after 10 games. My target for him this season is top 6. If he doesn't achieve that, he goes. If that's the pond we're fishing in, I also wouldn't be surprised if there was no release clause.
I guess that's something we can hopefully utilise, providing he's allowed to make his own suggestions if not on the spreadsheet. If he does get the gig, he will be able to asses players we have against the ones over there I suppose. But, that ultimately means a longer term assessment whilst getting up to speed with our players. And hopefully not too many punts on what he does know without understanding if it will improve our squad or not. Has its possible positives and negatives in that regard. As long as Devaney can hold some sway in terms of initial input to his thinking, I guess it could work. But I'm not sure he would have a massive pull on potential incomings that duff would have for example
The NI press saying he's held not having talks. It's the only name out of the interviewed that's surfaced. I'd say he's our man.
I think as fans we thought we were heading back to the days of being a viable club, Decent set up, 4th place finish with a Wembley appearance, Good young squad, solid 10k to 12k regular support and actually a fairly big club in league 1. So why aren't prospective Managers beating the door down to get at the helm of our club. Is it because the never ending tale of no funds, its all for sale, you won't keep your best players and despite changes at the top and all through the club were seen as a soft touch and appear to get bullied when doing business. couple this with some dubious appointments as head coach and people like Conman representing the club and maybe ya have the reason were not beating them off with a stick like most of us think we should be...
