That can work but it isn't what I have seen over the past few years. We haven't had a consistent style of play, we haven't recruited to fit the style (we have asked players to adapt to the style like Woodrow under Val). In the case of Hecky, his involvement was such that he felt he wasn't needed and I am sure Duff's departure has something to do with how the club is run. We have recruited Head Coaches with different philosophies, ones that have the Goalkeeper playing out from the back and passing across his area to those who play more direct and no risk football. I just don't see the consistency that you are referring to, which is why the model is hit and miss
100% understand that Helen but its the ill considered, insensitive and destructive nonsense that gets posted which is unnecessary. Many on here don't engage brain before hitting send. Broad spectrum of views....fine, but please stop.having a go at people when they haven't even kicked a ball for us or lambasting the board when they appoint a manager who hasn't even started the job yet. The forum needs to be a place of debate, analysis, fun, comment etc.......not a vehicle for empty meaningless negativity and impatience.
Alternative view. Fans don't have a realistic understanding of what the value of a footballer is, what a deal for an EFL footballer looks like based on time left on his contract or a view of what any club really gets for a player. We believe whispers on Facebook and Twitter of prices achieved for certain players (see Peterborough). The odd inflated price for a player skews our view of what every player is worth.
Not to mention that year we change all the playing philosophy. To try and engineer more money from player sales, then to get relegated and sell them on the cheap.
I've come to terms with the fact that we are bottom half champs top half league one side. I understand historically we are mid champs team but I think the prem parachute money has altered things. Once I came to terms with this it became easier to accept the recent ups and downs. If we land on the right bloke and he hangs around long enough the recruitment team get it spot on we could exceed this if not it's just something we will all have to come to terms with.
Why oh why cant the world be more like me. Everthing would be perfect if eveyone thought just l do. I can't understand it honestly..
Please forgive me for editing, but this great post is more readable in this form to me: I agree. A few paragraphs might make you point clearer, but depends what tech you are using to post Being aired on here following the signing of the new coach and the lack of signing of higher profile players. Some people need to wake up and smell the coffee. The philosophy of BFC has been the same ever since Patrick Cryne took over our Club. That philosophy accords with the first rule of business which is to "Stay in Business". BFC is, with some other clubs, in a minority in that they endeavour to comply with "Financial Fair Play Regulations". Many clubs are prepared to borrow money or with a banks approval run up a massive overdraft in the hope of chasing the Holy Grail. That being promotion to the Championship or the Prem. The risk being of course a points deduction or worse still administration. Fine if it works but the alternative is not so rosy. The only glitch in that theory is run up a massive debt. The old adage of owe a bank £100k and you have a problem, owe a bank £10 million and the bank has a problem. Remember the problems with Sheff Wendy when Mandaric took over.? The next problem if you get promoted is you are a 'have not' up against the 'haves'. A simple example; about 10 years ago when we were in the Championship our turnover was around £8.5 million. The average turnover for Championship clubs was around £16 million. We would have to fill Oakwell for every home match with 10,000 more than the ground holds (33,000) to compete at the same financial level. We played one of the 'haves' (West Ham) at that time who had a player, Kevin Nolan, who was paid £100k a week (circa £5 million a year) which was more than Barnsley's entire player wage bill, £4.6 million. That's what we are up against. I am not against people wanting to air their opinions and criticise the club, all I ask is if you must criticise be constructive. At the end of the day we are supporters. We'll be here when the current board, coaches and players are not. "Supporter", some wipeople need a Thesaurus more than a keyboard.
I’ve got to disagree with you if the quoted figure is correct, we should be getting more than 3 million for mads he’s going to a newly promoted prem team. As for rest roberts mawson they was an under Lee and Conway stewardship so can’t include them. Plus the fee for James bree was no where near what we should of been getting for him.
Surely, that's for you to say, you are the one saying we haven't. Most if not all are undisclosed so how do you know we haven't got true value. The only way to check is via the accounts but they take some reading because most appear to be made in instalments.
I agree to a large extent with what the OP says. On balance though, apart from being Barnsley fans who simply turn up because we are Barnsley fans we have to make a judgement about the owners/board of the club. What is their intent? Do they want to develop the club beyond reasons which are simply financial? Do they really care about the history, community and future generations for the sake of the club and town or are they just here to make money? There's a balance beyond just stating financial constraints, important though they are. The big picture of the board's true intent is important.
This is true, but it also looks massively stronger than the team that Duff inherited when he arrived, and even than the one which started last season. I'm pretty sure that our recruitment for the summer is far from over, and that when we do start signing people that we'll bring in some real quality for this level.
When the new owners took over from Patrick Cryne in 2017 they stated that the aim was to achieve stability in the Championship, and possibly build from there. Unless I've missed something (possible) then I assume that is still the overall aim of the currently-constituted Board, which is an offshoot of the 2017 consortium. "Not doing anything crazy" was one of the strategies to be adopted in furtherance of that aim. It seems to me that we have become so brainwashed into thinking solvency is the most important thing (and it is admittedly quite important) that we've forgotten about the footballing aims. I don't think The Rev. Preedy said in 1887, "whatever else we do lads, let's stay solvent!"
The harsh reality of running an unfashionable third tier provincial football club is that it is really really tough. The current owners were sold a dream of riches by Paul Conway that the data led approach and the sophistication adopted by them would reap success. The harsh reality was that Barnsley’s approach and the use of data was common place, European football was not some back water to be exploited but in reality a cut throat business where us, along with many other football clubs, were trying to unearth value. Under Conway’s leadership the war chest of £5m was spaffed up the wall with his scattergun recruitment and the club were in a bad financial position, hence the boardroom coup. Neerav and the new board have tried to reset but a pay roll over £10m does not fit with a third tier club generating turnover of around £8m. Last year they tipped in £6m plus to keep the club going, and, in part (£3m) to settle the deferred payment for the purchase of the club. The finances and ultimately success depended on transfer trading. To put this in context the last year in the Championship saw turnover of £15m with less than £3m coming from gate receipts. Adding 10,000 to the gate adds £3m max to turnover, being back in the Championship adds £7m. This is where the dilemma exists for the owners. Success on the field should translate to success financially but, if that fails the annual cost of supporting this is around £5m.
Ok... just because some fans see things differently is not a crime, just deal with it. You will never get 100% consensus on anything, and nor should you. You are allowed your say and so are others.. like it or not. The fact of the matter is, we've lost our head coach, who most agree worked wonders last season no matter what folk think of him now, and his assistant We've also lost our captain and 3 other Wembley starters. And our in- comings so far have come from Working, Hartlepool and Ponty Cols.. now they may turn out to be good signings but like our last lower league signing Barry Cotter will probably need at least bedding in.. We have a new head coach starting next week and another month before the season kickoff. So i'd say we've moved up from being in a mess, to one of transition, but if we are to make a serious attack on the top two places we need in at least L1 ready replacements.. My guess would be prem and decent champ loans, not everyones cup of tea.. Because sometimes to get em cheap or cheaper, the stipulation is, if fit they most play..But if we don't have much money and need to improve our first team, we don't have much choice. End of the day we don't run the club and aren't privy to the goings-on, so we must trust in the people in-charge and hope they get it right.
