Does those who have seen him play recently think he is likely to be pushing for a first team place this season?

He played at centre half against Worksop, so obviously not his natural position, but he's a very combative player. Likes to drive forward with the ball and doesn't shirk a tackle. I think the only reason he might not necessarily force his way into the starting 11 this season, is because it's Connell ahead of him. Quite a similar type of player though. He's got something about him though for sure.

Not sure if it means anything, but one of the hashtags on the story on the main site is "First Team".

EDIT: But he's still on the U21 tab on the same site, so the jury is out for now. As such, the "Comings & Goings" post remains unchanged.

Good news. I wonder if this is the way the club is heading again. If it is I can get behind it because that's what I feel the academy is for.

The academy is a constant conveyor belt, some get rejected along route. Some like Bree Holgate Brown and of course Stones get picked off long before they fall in the bin at the end of the belt. We could have that many maybe's, the under 21s could easily have a squard of 50 players, because the conveyor never stop's. The powers that be, Bobby, Tom Haban Nicky Eden.. and very soon Neill Collins. have to make a hard decisions every year. But at the end of the day its down to the lads themselves. And its probably as much mental strength as football ability that gets em through.
Been quite impressed by Joe, tuff little bugger in the Shez mold, never sherks a challenge, even though he's a bit on the small side. Will he make it here? don't know. But at 20 he's not a baby anymore and if not in the team or at least in and around the bench every week, he'll have to move on. This is his time to force his way in.. and i think he knows.
    Good luck lad.

Ideally, now he's signed this new contract (obviously depending on first team situation), I'd love for a low league 1/league 2 club to take a punt on him for a loan and he gets a full season under his belt of league football, instead of 10/15 games here & there in non-league. Does well in his first 6 months, trigger the extra year, if not, wait & see and evaluate him when he returns again

Took a long time to sort out, which is surprising.

Not if he was looking at other offers. Only returned to training last week. So probably on holidays.

You’ve got to be carful with releasing, youth players look at the mistake we made with realising Jordan Clark. Some players r late bloomers too.

We need to evaluate letting players go.
Give em a chance over loan players.

True but if a kid who's barely played isn't rushing to sign a new contract with us, it's worrying what's gonna happen in the next year with our six first team regular starters who we could lose all for nothing next summer.

You worry too much. He would be looking after himself. And most academy players never play a league game. If he left it woudnt be the end of the world for us either.
Mistakes are made. Kevin Keegan got released at Donny. that type of example is quite common.

97% of academy players in the prem. Never kick a ball in a prem game.

Of the 4,109 former academy footballers, 70 per cent were not even handed a professional contract at a Premier League or English Football League club. And only one in 10 has gone on to make more than 20 league appearances in the top four tiers of English football.

I don’t blame Ackroyd for taking sometime to think about his options before signing his new deal, he needs assurances he’s going to be involved in the first team rather than getting sent out on another loan. Same with Marsh. For me the club hasn’t done enough with youth players since Jacob Brown.

Our academy is arguably one of the best outside the Premier League, with the 18s winning their league last season it shows we’ve got some good players developing and it’s up to the new manager and his coaching staff to take some of these players to the next step in their careers.

I know the likes of Wolfe (before his injury) and Jalo got to play a few games last season but it wasn’t enough. Jalo in most of his appearances came on for the last 5 minutes of games barring his last appearance which he came on for 25 minutes in a game we were already 2-0 down. He never played after that and to me it felt like Duff had given up on him. That could knock a young lad’s confidence, but if anything it drove him to score consistently for the youth sides and subsequently Portugal’s U18s.
