I thought we got the cash and Regis for rammell?

If we paid Southend that is the worst ever decision. Irrespective of the Kennedy/trippier one.

I'm all for a dedicated recruitment team, especially with the data tools that are available these days.

But I don't think we are any better off if they are targeting just age 23 and under. We are still competing with one arm tied behind our backs, with the sole aim of profit rather than footballing success....... Yeah sure, they hope we have success along the way but the real aim is profit.

    The aim is sustainability.
Some of the Board no doubt were sold a fairy story of profit by Conway but I can't believe that, over the intervening years, they haven't been disabused of that idea.
They've put money in rather than taken it out and, let's be honest, unless we go up two leagues to the Prem or discover about three John Stones in quick succession it's difficult to see where any profit is coming in the short or medium term.

Very few clubs in the football league premier league or around Europe pick their transfers 100% most clubs have now gone down the head coach route where a recruitment team identifys players brings them to the attention of the head coach who has the final say.

The last person we gave control to was flicker. Danny Wilson came in and didn't like the idea of youth, we let him have some experience in turnbull, treacy and lita.

If I remember correctly it was the exact opposite reason. Supported by the board the decision was taken not to use agents who were charging massive fees

The game has changed. Performance is so data-led now, it simply can’t be ignored. Makes absolutely no sense for managers to be trying to find players. It’s just a huge bottleneck. You just end up with Keith Hill, bringing his mates with him wherever he goes.

However, I totally agree the manager should have the final say. Let the analysts and data scientists do the leg work, but then let the gaffer have sign off.

Yes, but he was very much a makeweight in the Rammell deal, the main point of which was, as far as I'm aware, to get some money for Rammell.

You're wrong about that mate, we got cash plus Regis as a makeweight.

One of the biggest disappointments that, but I think Rambo himself had maybe lost interest by then and wanted to go somewhere else.
And he just had to score against us didn't he, that season when he came back to Oakwell. :(

Mad Mel made some great signings.

One of the few missteps was when he brought in Graham along with quite a few other signings that pre-season. They either didn’t pan out or took some time to settle.

The biggest disappointment with Mel, and I think hes also said it since. Is it was wrong to try and get all 6 of those new signings into the team straight away.
Players like Ian Banks, Steve Davis, Charlie Bishop, John Pearson, and Phil Whitehead for example.
Although losing Tiler and Agnew and Baker in that summer of '91, was hard to get over.
