Done on the fly, On way back to London, late 90s. I’d been to visit my parents & watch Barnsley lose at home. Went via Birmingham & tracked half a record in an afternoon. At Terry Miles home analogue 8 track desk. Terry was already playing with Bernard Butler & Death in Vegas. But making a shoestring budget record for Dave, it cost £500. This is a piano ballad, there’s a space in the middle. I said to Kusworth, what you want?. He said play like Alan, or Mick Ronson. So I did. Happy memories.. This is a largely non football post. COYRs..x
So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweets shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopowner and his son... that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really. But, sure enough, I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show.
Can you hear Jeff in there? Probably not. There’s a bit of John Perry in there,? But basically me. I had a wah pedal, half cocked for tone, like Mick Ronson. Not deliberately, it just happened to be there. Me & Kusworth we’re nerds for guitar sounds.x
That’s an awesome story. Can’t top that. Unless I talk about Keith Richards after show party, upstairs at the Town & Country club, 1993.?
I’ve got a not very interesting AC/DC after party story from the Hallamshire Hotel in Sheffield 1976’
Thanks for sharing. Great playing & love the track, it's a bit hard to to categorise, which is always a good thing.
Jus ‘When dogs run to heaven, I’m feeling like hell’. Dave was such a great writer. He could break your heart from a mile away.. I’m good pals with Mick Taylor & he loves my break on this one. His partner Marlies told me, he even sat down & worked it out, note for note. Which is nice & ironic, considering I stole half of it from him. & his whole tone, on those early 70s Rolling Stones records..
Post punk Brum Beat, I think? Dave was in a band with Steve Duffy, Subterranean Hawks. Andy Wickett was there too I think? Or was that TV Eye? Ask Gordon Ottershaw, he’s a nerd for this crap. Knows my career better than me. Anyway, that morphed into Duran Duran. Steve stuck around early on , but thankfully went his own way, as did Dave. Rio is basically Dave’s song. He & Andy sold them for £50 in a pub in Moseley, if you want to believe that.? Girls on Film is definitely Andy’s song. It couldn’t be anyone else. .
I think you posted this a few years back mate nd I commented back then. Beautiful playing and feel on that lead part. Understated and sounds like you're sliding up the strings and bending without plucking. Gorgeous work. I bet you were buzzing when you pulled that out the bag in the studio. Was it a tele?
No mate. I was on the way back from My folks( both since gone) I didn’t have a guitar with me. So used one Of Dave’s. An early 70s Japanese Les Paul copy. It does sound a bit Fender though, true. I had the guitar on low volume, let the little Roland cube do the work. It’s actually a very awesome guitar. The pick ups are wild. It takes some controlling, a wild guitar. Never underestimate this Japanese builds in 70s/80s. Some cheap is, like the Kay brand? I’ve had 4 Gibsons (my 76 custom was nicked, years ago) ButcI have this baby, my 1988 Epiphone. & she’s the bestest ever, truly m, trust me. Japan we’re outbuilding American guitars. That’s why Squier & Epiphone became a budget brand. I have a 1986 MIJ Stratocaster too. It’s the ********, best Strat ever. I loaned it to Peter Perrett’s son& it’s all over Pete’s last record. Which makes me happy.. Note to everyone, never engage MrCin conversations about music, art, guitars & football. He’ll bore your tits off.
Awesome. Yeah I was getting that feel that the pickups were amazing, giving a sustain that you were sculpting with your finger bending- sliding unexpected notes and half notes on the climbs. I used to like that.sort of balance: put loads of gain through the amp and have the guitar vol low and ride the feedback. I guess like white light / white heat era Lou. Also liked the sustain on small stone stuff like phasers and big muffs. Les paul frets are too narrow for my fingers tho- i always play fenders, particularly teles.
So what’s happened to Peter Mr C? Saw him on his last tour with his son but after a couple of years of being activity he’s gone quiet.
He’s doing well. The Only Ones are gigging again. Kellie’s not there of course. I’m hoping Steve Hands fills in on drums. He played in Pete’s 90s solo band. Also on my solo stuff. My 4th favourite drummer of ALL time.. Only Ones are playing Hebden Bridge in August. If you want to go & don’t mind driving, I could probably score a couple of guest lists. They owe me a favour, for the loan of the Strat. I can hear the spunky monkey fans wondering wtf we’re talking about ? .MUSIC, you little wazerks.!!
