Neil Peart is a great shout, as is Joey Waronker. Saw him with REM shortly after Bill Berry left and he was seamless. I would say that Bill Berry's long-term replacement Bill Rieflin (RIP) is also worthy of a slot. I would also place Roger Taylor up there as not only is he a brilliant drummer, he's also got a better singing voice than many lead vocalists.
He’ll be on with both The Black Lamps and Cubic at Wentworth Festival in September, they’re both on in the new music tent.
Joey’s awesome. & such a lovely fella. Yes with REM. I watched them from side of stage, Glastonbury 99. He also played on Elliott Smith’s XO record & loads more besides. & my friend Marie Therese unreleased album. From around the same time.
Yes. Cubic are headlining. But I watch them all the time. I want to see Kim Wilde do Kids in America..
John Bonham. Led Zeppelin. Charlie Watts. Rolling Stones. Keith Moon. The Who Ringo Starr. Beatles Nick Mason. Pink Floyd. John Coghlan. Status Quo. Cozy Powell. Rainbow. Iain Paice. Deep Purple. Bill Ward. Black Sabbath. Dan Goffey. Supergrass.
I saw them a few weeks later in Manchester. Great mini-tour in summer 99. They only played a few gigs in the UK that year. Did a lot of Up live, many songs for the first and only time. The album had been recorded with drum machines and loops after Berry's departure, so sounded quite unusual, very synthy. I really wasn't sure how it would come across live, but it was absolutely tremendous, in no small part thanks to Joey. Walk Unafraid became a mainstay of their live shows after that, but Lotus never saw the light of day again in concert, which made me very sad.
The Rosadocs played in there last year, they’ve been given a slot on the main stage this year. Lamar, Toploader, Sleeper and Kim Wilde on main stage. Few other decent bands on new music stage too - Sweet Beast from Sheffield ( mate from work is their drummer). If classic rock covers is your thing Toronto ( a great Barnsley band who do the clubs around Sth Yorks and the NorthEast) with Matt Townsend on drums, Perry Duke on bass, Steve Clifford on guitar and the fantastic Sharon Lewis on vocals) doing a slot in new music stage because Late Night Legacy have had to pack in.
Wasn't trying to be diverse. Just liked all those bands. My list could have been a heck of a lot longer but didn't want to resort to Google mate .
Up is a great record, not everyone’s favourite I know. But transition between Bill leaving & Joey becoming more permanent. They didn’t half milk it, though. Jeyzus, only your drummer has left the band. Nobody’s fcking died..
Are you going? We’ll be there, go every year - new music tent is run by the lads who set up and did the original Live in Barnsley festival.
I've watched Cubic (or more accurately, the bands that the two lads who front the group have been in since we were kids) in some right f***ing toilets, I can't not watch them there.
I really like Up. It's one of the least accessible records they ever made, but it's well worth the effort.
