I am an OCD kind of person and I always have to stand up briefly every evening at 7:12pm for good luck. Just wondered if anyone else has the same problem.

my wife left me because of my chronic OCD.

As she was leaving, I shouted to her - 'don't forget to close the door 5 times on your way out'

My wife's a bit OCD and she's got a load of porcelain ladies strategically placed on window ledges. I take great delight in turning the odd one round. Drives her nuts :D:D

Just a gentle reminder that the WHO classes OCD as one of the top 10 most debilitating diseases someone can suffer with. I know it's often used in jokes, but having lived for 10 years with someone who has a real, severe case, it's bloody horrible. It takes over every waking second. I know most people only joke about it because they don't know it can be so serious, so I always feel the need to mention this whenever OCD is brought up. People who suffer from the real condition are deeply hurt by the jokes, and I say that as someone who used to make said jokes.

Are we joking about cancer next? Or is it just mental illness that's fair game?

Sorry mate no offence meant whatsoever. My wife isn't really OCD, just a bit particular. My former step-daughter was a depressive and slightly OCD so I do know that it's a serious condition. Once again, sorry and I hope your partner is ok.

Not all people with ocd. It isn’t right to generalise.

Some people like finding humour in their situation and embrace it. Many.

OCD is a hugely debilitating condition, I’ve seen at close quarters how draining it is. Two family members, an uncle and a cousin, I lived with both for a prolonged time. Both have relatively severe cases. Dictates their whole day.

But there is room for humour. As my uncle says, ‘ocd does my head in so I’ve tried to wash my hands of it - but I’ve not stopped washing the bloody things since’.

As well as ocd, I have another family member with severe Tourette’s. Physical tics, verbal outbursts. It absolutely knackers her, the poor lass is sometimes dead on her feet before midday. Her mind is never at rest.

But we rip the royal piss out of her, as she does herself, as she’d feel completely left out and molly-coddled if we didn’t.

If people are offended by a joke then they are offended, but it doesn’t mean anyone else in a similar situation will be and doesn’t mean the joke can’t be made. I also feel people are frightened to death of talking about certain things and we shouldn’t be. Nothing should be taboo, as that leads to bigger issues.

I’m not going to go there too much with cancer - it’s emotive for everyone. Everybody has lost someone or knows someone who has lost someone to it.

But I will say that I’ve watched several family members and a good friend fade away to that ******* disease, and for each of them it was dark humour, including jokes at their expense many would deem in poor taste, that was one of few respites they got; and their last months would have been even bleaker without that. It also helped those being left behind to have something to smile about at a really horrible time.

I’m not saying that would be the way for all, of course. But i think it’s very dangerous to say we can’t joke about any given subject.

Some folk revel in taking the pee out of themselves. With their disabilities. One mate is blind. And welcomes comments meant in jest from those he knows about his disability and bounces back with summat funnier.

One ex workmate has huntingdons. Has the piss taken out of him. Giving pi55 takes back. No one in his circle of colleagues takes offence. Call it banter.i suppose.

Gaffer pulled me one day after a team meeting. to have a word with the lads as he thought it was not appropriate humour. As he felt the lad concerned in his mind would feel picked on. Bear in mind the lad concerned was the biggest pi55 taker of the lot.

I tried to put him right on the situation. I was a colleage/mate for yrs and knew the carry on. But said I would speak to the lad first.

I asked the lad concerned if he wanted me to step in and have a quiet word with his workmates. If at anytime he took offence/got upset . His reply "dont you effing dare I'll knock thi block off. All the banter to and fro gets me through the day. I love it" . I already knew what his response would be tbh as he is second to none at making people laugh and smile as he gives it back in spades. And who am I to step in. if it does that. It helped him get through the day.

If at any stage in the future he said it was affecting him. he would tell em in the right manner and I knew they would stop immediately and respect his wishes to leave alone so to speak.

I do agree with GC though that people need to be careful around others. Who are not be the butt of a joke, but may get upset by it.
