One highlight for me is the deli shop in the market, I was fortunate to work in the town a few times the other week so made my way to the market for a sarnie, £1.90 for a Turkey roll, must’ve been 3lb of meyt……absolutely lovely too!! Even Sundays are busy now, a still think we need another few shops but to go in the glassworks but it’s definitely up there with the best town centres I’ve seen
I was going to say Wakefield was in a similar position to Barnsley. The new centre (whose name I've forgotten) near the bus station is nice, but the rest is in need of work.
Trinity Walk, yes its very nice. The problem Wakefield has got is that it covers 5 other towns - Ponty, Cas, Fev, Normy and Knottingley. So as soon as any money is spent in Wakefield itself they all start crying about it. Best thing would be to abandon them with a chernobyl style exclusion zone.
It's a shame about the Kirkgate area. I'm all for redevelopment but for me they've just demolished it and replaced it with an open plan walkway. It needed some pubs and proper shops building. Especially now the St Oswald, WMC, Greyhound and Wakefield Arms have gone.
Yeah it said Wakefield v Barnsley, which is the best and Barnsley came out best if i remember rightly.
It certainly seems to be happening but it should have been happening years ago, so we’re now lagging behind. Kirkgate development particularly should have been all completed by now. How long has the old ABC been empty ? Anyway it is encouraging for the City I suppose. How long are you going back SD when you mention St Oswald and Greyhound ?
To when the St Oswald (Snooty Fox) was closed and a bloody great board was put around it. Greyhound been gutted and left to fall apart. An eyesore.
I remember the comments well.I wouldn't want to live anywhere else and I'm so proud to tell people where I'm from.
As an erstwhile brickie I think BHS is made of engineering bricks and a 3:1 sand cement ratio. It will put up some resistance.
I live in wake and can't praise barnsley enough for the way they have rebuilt the town. I don't go often but I'm just blown away and so are others who I recommend it to. Great stuff.....I actually enjoy going even though I hate shopping with a passion.
Boots is of more use than anything in the glassworks for me flannels why the **** did we need one of them I barnsley.
I can’t wait til next week, when the direct bus starts. I want to have a good look around. I might even take the Teddier..
Not saying it is closing, just that it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s one of the 300 they’ve earmarked for closure. I suspect Cortonwood is more profitable - I guess time will tell. Fingers crossed the old M&S isn’t empty for too long too - that’s closing in November.
You mean the Grey Horse ? It was finally sold a few years ago and it’s boarded up but someone said that it’ll be “done out” and reopened as a restaurant/ takeaway soon. The Snooty Fox was flattened about four years ago
Yeah it was flattened four years ago and still nothing there to replace it. Have they opened up the shelter on Platform 2 at Kirkgate yet?
